Bible Verses About Marriage

Marriage is a good thing and I would like to state that this will be the first post on marriage on this blog. The next ones will go into details about the original design of marriage.

Marriage is a sacred covenant between a man and woman promising faithfulness before God first and then themselves. It is a covenant and not just some hollywood show. It is God’s design for the backbone of society and the growth of the human race. What does the Bible say about marriage? A lot in fact. After recounting the creation of Eve in the Garden of Eden and showing Adam’s reaction, commentary is included in the narrative which emphasizes the importance of marriage, “Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh” (Genesis 2:24). This is one of the Bible Verses About Marriage. This verse shows that from the beginning God desired marriage to be the most significant human relationship. Later in the New Testament (Mark 10:1-12) Jesus used this same passage to illustrate why divorce was outside of God’s intended purpose for people.

What else does the Bible say about marriage? It says that marriage is a symbol of the relationship between Christ and the church, with Christ symbolizing the man and the church symbolizing the woman. In this the man is to be willing to sacrifice himself for his wife as Christ has done for the church and the wife is to submit to her husband as the church submits to Christ. When both are fulfilling their particular duties, the relationship is strong and healthy. A Christian marriage can be a great testimony to the existence and love of God.

Marriage as an institution is under attack in many societies today. People have opinions about who should be allowed to marry and governments are making laws and handing down court decisions. When all is said and done, however, the only thing that matters is what the Bible says about marriage. Everything else is simply rhetoric and opinion. When we stand before God and account for what we have done in this life he will not ask us if we did a good job conforming to society but rather did we seek to obey the commands he set out in the Bible.

Recently the internet was full of messages of people who were against the legalization of gay marriages. I was also saddened by the news but most people don’t know where the problem came from. I believe the main problem is the church. When you look at the church there are so many divorces that is shocking. Pastors are divorcing and marrying other women. I believe if we want to change the society, the body of Christ has to be an example to world. We can talk as much as we want but one thing that will change the world is for families to stay together and pray together as well as become models for Christ.
