If random people on the street were asked: What does heaven look like? They might respond by talking about Angels with halos, or people sitting on clouds strumming harps. Maybe streets of gold might be mentioned or pearly gates. A lot of the images that people have about what heaven looks like have been molded by the pop culture in movies, cartoons, and books. Other ideas about what heaven looks like come from people who have died and come back to life. While dead, they have stories of visiting heaven or hell. Some of these experiences might be true but they are not the best way to know about heaven.
The best place to find out about what heaven looks like is in the Bible. There are three important things to know about heaven. First of all, heaven is where God is but remember He also lives in us because the Bible says we are the temple of God. If it contained nothing but God it would still be far more amazing and glorious than we could ever imagine. To be in the presence of God worshiping him before his throne will be the joy of heaven. Second, in heaven there is no sin or evil. All the pain of this life that causes suffering and separation will not be present. In heaven we will be free from the curse of death.
Finally, along with this, heaven will only contain those who are righteous. Only those who have put their faith in Jesus Christ and accepted his sacrifice for the forgiveness of their sin will be able to enter heaven. It will not be about how good a person was or anything they achieved on earth. Admittance into heaven is only possible through the free gift of God through God’s Son Jesus Christ. The truth is we don’t know much about what heaven looks like but we can look forward to it knowing, “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him” (1 Corinthians 2:9b).
It will be a pity to miss out on Heaven just because you have chosen not to believe. Jesus came to model the life we are to live here on earth. I pray that you begin to see this life just as God sees it and as a result begin to walk and grow into becoming like Him.
