It is said that the sayings and doing of Jesus are far more numerous than those recorded in Scriptures. The words of Jesus are often portrayed in red so that much of the Gospels is identified as His teachings. To pick just a few favorites is more difficult than one would think. Since He often taught the listeners by telling stories in the form or parables, many of those words could be quoted and would be recognized by believers. He also is quoted in several discourses, including the Sermon on the Mount, The Lord’s Prayer and the Last Supper words.
Although there are verses that indicate Jesus knew how to read and write, none of the books of the Bible claim to be written by Jesus personally. We have only the writings of those who were part of His followers who recorded His words in the Gospels.
The direct words of Jesus that are recorded by His followers carry information that changed the course of history. The words are a direct message from God to mankind. Because Jesus is the Son of God, it is God speaking to us with the most important precepts and instructions that we need in order to live a fulfilled life.
He spoke words of education, instruction, love and even anger. They were always targeted to the real needs of those to whom he was speaking. We can use those words today for the same purpose. It’s important to listen to the message that comes through the words.
