I decided to write a post on Prayers For Thanksgiving. When praying in gratitude toward God, there are several elements which should be included in order for us to truly connect with Him. Unless we know the elements of a thanksgiving prayer, the words that are said are only words. Prayer is always intended to be a two-way conversation with God. Here are some of the elements which we should ensure are included in our prayers, especially prayers of thanksgiving.
We should pray to the Father. The Lord’s Prayer is directed to the Father. We recognize His role in everything that we are grateful for. Further, we should pray in Jesus name. The Holy Spirit carries our prayers to the Father. Thus, all three Persons of the Godhead are involved in our prayers, regardless of the type of prayer.
Our prayers should begin with our words of praise to the Father. Again, it is Jesus’s words that are to serve as our example of how to pray. Prayers for thanksgiving should be specific in nature. We should give thanks for something specific. An attitude of prayer will show gratitude for many things, but it should be more than just a “blessings upon” prayer. Maybe you have a long list of specific items that you want to remember to thank God for. It’s okay to write them down if you need an aid to memory.
A prayer of thanksgiving doesn’t have to be spoken aloud. Some people prefer to pray silently in a time for growing closer and communing with God. Other people find a meaningful way of speaking with God by writing Him a letter. If you were thanking an absent friend for something, you might choose to write a thank you note in gratitude for the gift they provided, or the act of service they performed.
A prayer of thanksgiving should be sincere. It must come from a grateful heart or it is just a few meaningless sounds. God knows our hearts, so He knows whether or not there is sincerity included in the words which we say or write. Taking time each day to pray to God with words of thanksgiving will help your entire day to go better.
