A Prayer About Deep Grief

Grief is the emotion that we feel whenever we experience loss. However, grief is not specifically about the loss of someone or something; rather, more than the loss, it is the transition that occurs when a person is grieving. For example, when a wife loses her husband, it’s not just the loss of her husband that makes it hard, but also the changes that she understands will result. It means she has to face life without her husband, and this grief is a painful emotion. However, the Bible is not foreign to it; it offers comfort to those who are in Christ and are grieving.

Heavenly Father, as I grieve, I thank You because You are gentle and lowly in spirit. You carry me with delicacy. Your love is steadfast, and it endures forever. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

What Is God’s Heart Toward the Grieving?

The Bible is clear that God is with those who are grieving and that He is the One Who comforts them. When we grieve, waking up every day and facing the transition that we are in can be very difficult. However, the Bible says in Lamentations 3:22-23 that God’s mercies are new every morning. Not only that, but it also says that God’s love is steadfast, which means unwavering. Whether you are grieving or not, God’s love is always there, and nothing can separate you from it, for it is constant.

In (Psalm 34:18 The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.), it is written that God is near to the brokenhearted and that He saves the crushed in spirit. Amid the difficulty you may be in right now as you are grieving, God is with you, regardless of your emotional confusion. In fact, in Psalm 139:7-12, David asks God how he can flee from His presence. Wherever he goes, God, in His omnipresence, is there. If he goes to the heavens, He is there. Even in the depths of Sheol, He is there. If He goes to where the sea lies or where the light rises, He is there, and even the light cannot outrun Him. God is everywhere; that is your confidence that He is also with you.

God does not leave us in such a broken state as we grieve. The Scriptures tell us in (Psalm 147:3 He heals the brokenhearted  and binds up their wounds.) that God is the One Who binds up our wounds and heals our broken hearts. Not only does He heal, but He is also the One Who comforts us. 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 tells us that God is the God of all comfort and the Father of all mercies, Who comforts us in times of affliction. We receive comfort from God so we can comfort others going through the same distress.

Psalm 147:3 He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.

God is our heavenly Father Who is involved in our lives. Therefore, whenever we find ourselves grieving deeply, the best response is not to take it alone but to come to God. God knows what we are going through. Jesus clothed Himself with flesh and blood and knew what it meant to be human and experience grief. He lost friends when they betrayed Him and His father Joseph when He was young. Christ knows all your pain and also knows the medicine for it. He is a gentle servant who takes care of His sheep.

How Do We Pray When We Grieve?

We pray to God by casting our burdens to Him, as written in (Psalm 55:22 Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.). When you cast your burdens to God as you grieve, you can be honest with God about all the emotions that you are feeling. The Book of Psalms is filled with such comforts. As you cry out to God, know that God understands You; He knows everything about you and about everything (Psalm 139:1-6). Therefore, you can rest assured that He understands you even if you struggle to pray through all your emotions.

When grieving, you can also pray and ask God for healing and the grace and strength you need, confess biblical truths, and declare Who God is over your current pain. (Hebrews 4:16 Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.) tells us that in Christ, we can freely approach God’s throne of grace and ask Him for grace and mercy in times of need.

A Prayer About Deep Grief

Heavenly Father, I am in so much pain right now because of the rejection that I just went through. All my visions and dreams of being with this person seem to have gone down the drain. LORD, help me in this difficult situation and give me the strength to face each day. Thank You because no matter what turmoil I may be in, the truth is that You are always with me. Heal me, Father, and remind me of my joy in Christ. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Even if you feel like you are currently walking in the valley of the shadow of death, know that even there, God’s goodness and lovingkindness always follow you. Christ is your shepherd, Whose staff and rod will comfort you. Take heart, for God is faithful and sovereign. We all see that, in the end, Christ is our rock on Whom we can build.
