How To Pray For Divine Intervention

Divine intervention is something that Christians pray for within many different aspects of their lives. They pray for divine intervention for their nation, community, church, the lives of other people, and their very own lives. While the word “divine intervention” is not found in the Bible, it is similar to prayers, supplications, and intercessions with which we ask and pray to God for Him to move regarding a particular area of our lives.

Father in heaven, I thank You because Your providence is always at work. You are not just a God Who watches from above what is happening here. You are involved in every detail of our lives. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Why Pray for divine intervention?

One of the most essential teachings Christians believe is that God is sovereign. That means He reigns over everything, including the events of this world, down to every single detail of our lives. In Psalm 9, it is written that the LORD reigns. It is not government leaders that reign, but the LORD. It is a source of comfort for us Christians because no matter what difficulties we may be going through in our lives, it is not the devil, circumstances, luck, accidents, or fate that reigns, but God. In ( In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will: Ephesians 1:11), it is written that everything works according to the purpose of the counsel of His will. Because of that, we can rest assured that, indeed, everything works together for the good of those who love God, as written in (And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28). Just as Joseph said in (But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive. Genesis 50:20), what was meant for evil against us, God in His sovereignty can mean for our good.

Christians also know that God is omniscient; in other words, all-knowing. Whenever we pray, we don’t pray to inform God as if He does not know what we need. In fact, in (For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O Lord, thou knowest it altogether. Psalm 139:4), it is written that God already knows what we are about to say even before it is on our tongue. Psalm 139 tells us about God’s omniscience. His knowledge about everything is so deep and wondrous that it is too much for us. As written in (Dost thou know the balancings of the clouds, the wondrous works of him which is perfect in knowledge? Job 37:16), God is perfect in knowledge. There is nothing for Him to discover or learn because He already knows everything. He has knowledge from eternity past, and nothing can be excluded from Him to know.

For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O Lord, thou knowest it altogether. Psalm 139:4

We are pointing out these essential attributes of God because while it brings us comfort, some believers also use this as a reason to question the sense of praying. If God already knows what we are about to pray, why pray? Also, if God is sovereign and all-powerful, why must we pray? After all, He is good and wise. He can do things on His own. While indeed there is truth to that, it does not necessarily mean that prayers are senseless.

We have to understand that just as God ordains the end, He also ordains the means. We need to pray because God ordained or uses prayers for Him to bring about His will. A good example of this is preaching the Gospel. God by Himself can cause others to be saved even without us preaching the Gospel. He can miraculously reveal the Gospel in everyone’s dreams if He wanted. However, God chooses to partner with us. Therefore, He ordained the means – us preaching the Gospel to the nations of this world, as written in Matthew 28:16-20 – to bring salvation to the world so that all may believe and repent.

The same goes for our prayers. God uses our prayers to bring about His will when we pray for our nation, communities, friends, families, and ourselves. That is why He commanded us to pray and even told us that our prayers are powerful, as written in (Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. James 5:16). The sovereignty and omniscience of God do not make our prayers senseless. In fact, if we know that God is sovereign, we will all pray because we know that God, without any hardship, can bring about the prayers that we pray according to His will, as written in 1 John 5:14-15. It is more comforting to pray for our nation or a struggling friend, knowing we are praying to a sovereign God.

The truth that God is all-knowing is also comforting. When we pray, it’s not like we are informing Him. He knows everything even before we pray, as written in (Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him. Matthew 6:8). Therefore, we have the assurance that when we pray, God understands everything about where we are coming from.

Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him. Matthew 6:8

May the truth of God’s sovereignty and omniscience inspire and motivate us all the more to pray and intercede for matters regarding our nation, our government leaders, the different sectors of society, our church, and many different things and people to pray for. Our prayers are not for nothing, given that we are praying to a God Who sits above all, reigning on His throne as the Most High God.

Heavenly Father, You are holy, and there is none like You. The truth that You are sovereign and all-knowing gives us comfort, knowing that You make our prayers powerful. Indeed, there is nothing impossible when we pray because we have a sovereign God Who accomplishes His will. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

How do I pray for divine intervention?

We pray for divine intervention by praying for God’s will and for Him to move regarding a specific area of our lives, certain other people, or a sector of society. In 1 Timothy 2:1, it is written that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgiving must be made for all people. Also, in Philippians 4:6-7, it is written that we are to present our prayer requests to God, and His peace shall guard our hearts and minds.

To do this, think of what specific area of life or for whom you want to pray for divine intervention or for God to move. Is it for the government leaders to make wise and right decisions? Is it healing for an emotionally broken friend? Is it for a lost person to come to the saving knowledge of Who Christ is? As you identify that, pray and ask God for what it is that You would want Him to do. It could be praying for those government leaders to hear the Gospel and for the Christians in the government to be bold in preaching Christ. You can pray for the Holy Spirit to comfort an emotionally broken friend and make his heart whole again. Praying for divine intervention could be praying that the Holy Spirit will open the spiritual eyes of the lost person you are reaching out to.

A good thing to remember here is to always pray for God’s will. We will know what the will of God is and pray prayers according to His will as we continue to renew our minds with His Word, as written in (And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. Romans 12:2). With minds renewed by His Word, we can discern what the will of God is – pleasing and perfect – and pray for those things.

And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. Romans 12:2

Below is a sample prayer for divine intervention:

Father in heaven, I pray for my friend, who is currently hurting emotionally. I pray that You would cause him to primarily seek comfort in Your Word as he goes through a season of pain. I pray that You would lead him to the goodness and soothing comfort of the Gospel. Keep him from falling away from the faith just because of the pain he is going through. Minister to his heart, Holy Spirit. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

In Job 42:2, Job says that no purpose of the LORD’s can be thwarted. That is even more comfort when we pray for God’s will, interceding and praying for His intervention about some issues. In Christ, all things hold together, as written in Colossians 1:16-17; not in other people, events, trials, or circumstances. Knowing Who God is, we cannot help but worship Him and be in awe of Him.
