A Good Prayer To Say In Church Before Bible Study

We depend on God when it comes to everything because He is the source of all things (For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen. Romans 11:36). If we are about to take an exam, we ask Him for the strength and understanding that we need. We ask God for wisdom and grace when we are challenged at work. Even in times of difficulties and pain, we depend on God, for it is His refuge and comfort to which we can run. The same applies when it comes to doing a Bible study. We are still dependent on God, so we start our Bible study with a prayer.

Father in heaven, all understanding and knowledge come from You. As we study and talk about Your Word today, open our eyes and give us an understanding of what we are studying, and may it help us grow in our walk with You. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Why Pray Before A Church Bible Study?

We need to pray before a church Bible study because we depend not on our own intellect and understanding but on the grace and mercy of God for the things that we’re going to study during the Bible study. The understanding, the things we learn, and the things we behold about God as we study His word all come from God.

Daniel told his friends to seek God when King Nebuchadnezzar ordered the execution of all the wise men in Babylon because none of them could interpret his dream (Then Daniel went to his house, and made the thing known to Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, his companions: That they would desire mercies of the God of heaven concerning this secret; that Daniel and his fellows should not perish with the rest of the wise men of Babylon. Then was the secret revealed unto Daniel in a night vision. Then Daniel blessed the God of heaven. Daniel 2:17-19). Daniel told his friends to seek God because it is only by God’s mercy that they can have the knowledge, wisdom, and understanding that they possess, which all point to God and His glory.

We must also pray before doing a Bible study because it is an act of humility before God. We come to Him in prayer because we know that, in the end, it is God who opens our eyes so that we may behold the wondrous things of His law ( Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law. Psalm 119:18). Prayer is us coming before His throne of grace, which we can confidently approach because of what Jesus did for us on the cross, making us holy and righteous and able to stand before the presence of God and ask Him for grace and mercy in times of need (Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need. Hebrews 4:16).

How Can I Pray Before A Bible Study?

You can pray before your Bible study by praying for two specific things. First, you can ask God for His grace and mercy to understand what you are about to study. The passage we mentioned above, Psalm 119:18, is a good example of this prayer. We should ask God to open our eyes to behold the wondrous things of His law. As we begin our Bible study, we pray for those who will study God’s word, that their eyes will be opened to see the glories of God. We pray that it won’t just be any lecture from school but one where the participants are in awe of who God is as they study His word.

The second prayer we can pray is that the knowledge and understanding we receive from God as we behold His glory and awesomeness in studying His word won’t just remain head knowledge but will also translate into application, practicality, and more mature Christian living. The Bible says in 2 Timothy 3:16-17 that Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, and that a man of God is complete, equipped for every good work

That is precisely what we hope to achieve in Bible study: we wish to behold the glories of God, which will cause us to walk in obedience to Him and spiritual maturity, offering our lives as living sacrifices to God and having our minds renewed (I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. Romans 12:1-2).

Lastly, you can pray for the teacher (or if you are the teacher) to have the grace to teach about the Word of God faithfully and have the understanding, wisdom, and knowledge that he needs as he teaches people about the things of God (Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 2 Timothy 2:15).

Heavenly Father, as we begin our Bible study, I pray that You will give the students the grace and mercy they need as they study Your Word in order to understand what we are going to study. Open their eyes and give them understanding that they may behold Your glory, Your majesty and splendor, and the wondrous things of Your law. May what they learn today help them grow spiritually, so they can apply their knowledge in practical living. As I teach them, give me the grace to communicate Your truths well and be faithful towards Your Word. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Discovering more about the things of God, His character, and His glories is a fulfilling and exciting endeavor. Beholding His glory by studying His Word causes us to be zealous and passionate for Him. It makes us love God more. The more we know about God, the more it draws our affections towards Him, as we can’t help but find Him beautiful and majestic.
