A Healing Prayer For Our Son

As a parent, it is never pleasant to see your son sick. You will always want what is best for your son, namely to live a healthy life. Thus, you pray for healing whenever your son is sick, and you should pray for continued good health all the time, even when he is healthy. Praying for healing for your son does not only pertain to matters of physical sickness. Your son could be going through tough times both mentally and emotionally, and what you ought to pray for him is healing of the heart.

Father in heaven, I thank You because You are Jehovah Rapha, the God who heals. You heal not just our physical sickness but also our emotional pain. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

What does the Bible say about healing?

In Psalm 103:2-4, we can see that our God is a God who heals. That is why one of His names is “Jehovah Raph.” Because of that, if our son is sick, we can cry out to God and pray for healing. In Philippians 4:6-7, it is written that we must present our prayer requests to Him. Obviously, if our son is sick, our concern and request to God is for his healing and recovery. With that, we pray and present to God our prayer request for the healing and recovery for our son. As we do that, His peace, which transcends all understanding, shall guard our hearts and minds.

Aside from healing, you can also pray for good overall health for your son. According to 3 John 1:2, we can pray that things may go well with our son and for his good health. In 1 Peter 5:6-7, it is written that we are to humble ourselves under the mighty hand of God, and doing this means casting our cares and burdens to Him. Our son’s health is always our care, burden, and concern as a parent. However, we are not meant to take it all on alone. The Bible says that we must humble ourselves and cast our cares and burdens to God, as He also cares for our son.

As mentioned above, healing is not limited to physical ailments. We can also be wounded emotionally and mentally. It could be that your son is not suffering physically but emotionally. He may have endured hurt and pain, such as being betrayed by a friend, heartbreak, disappointment in his career, frustration, and many more. In such cases, God is the only One to whom we can run.

As a parent, you may do everything possible to comfort your son and be there for him, but in the end, it is God who will restore and heal him. Psalm 147:3 states that God is the One who heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. Psalm 34:18 also tells us that He is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit. In other words, God is the only One who can make your son whole again.

If your son is a follower of Christ, another good thing you can do is point him back toward the gentleness, kindness, and mercies of Christ. You can remind him of the Gospel and communicate it to him in a manner so that he can see the sweetness the Gospel brings to those who are broken, in distress, and hurting. Christ is our High Priest, clothed in flesh and blood, as written in Hebrews 4:15. Therefore, as our doctor, He knows every pain and hurt we have and gently soothes and heals them. He can empathize with us. Also, as written in Isaiah 42:3, Christ will not break bruised reeds nor quench smoldering wicks. That is how gentle He is towards those who are hurting.

If your son is not yet a follower of Christ, the greatest thing you can do is preach the Gospel to Him. Christ is the ultimate persona and the solution that every person needs. More than emotional pain and physical sickness, sin is our worst problem. However, Christ has already paid for our sins on the cross, and through Him, we can have eternal life and forgiveness. We can become new creations if we repent and believe the Gospel. 

Father in heaven, I thank You because You are the God who heals and whom we can pray and cry out to for healing. You also heal our broken hearts and save those who are crushed in spirit. Thank You because one of the ministries of Christ is to heal and soothe those whose hearts are aching. Open our eyes to the gentleness, soothing, and sweetness of the Gospel, where we can come to Christ if we feel heavy. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

How can I pray for healing for our son?

You can pray for healing for your son by asking God for healing, whether in the form of physical sickness, emotional pain, or both. What specific concerns do you have for your son? Does he have a fever? You can ask God for healing and recovery upon your son from that fever. Does he feel like something is wrong and needs a checkup? You can pray to God for good health for your son so that no serious sickness will occur. If he is going through emotional pain, then pray for comfort to come upon Him, along with emotional healing, and ask that he will see Christ in that season of pain.

Father in heaven, I pray for healing upon my son so that he will have a fast recovery from the fever and cold he is battling. I pray that his temperature will go back to normal. Give him the strength he needs and a strong appetite so that he may recover quickly. I pray that it is only a cold and that no serious underlying sickness is behind it. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Heavenly Father, I pray for my son, who is going through emotional pain. Heal his heart and restore his brokenness to wholeness. I know that You see every pain and tear he has and that You are near to him in this season. May he see Christ in his life and find comfort in Him. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

As a parent, we ultimately entrust the well-being of our children to God. We may do everything possible to be good parents, but God is the only person who can be with them 24/7. It is God who looks after our son, which is why we should always pray to Him regarding our son’s well-being. Though God can show common grace to those who are not in Christ, it is important to preach the Gospel to him if he is not yet a follower of Christ, as it is only in Christ that we can be adopted as God’s children.
