If you are a Christian man, you must first determine whether you are in the right season to pray for a wife, pursue a woman, and get married. The Bible tells us that there is a time and season for everything, including marriage. If you are a man, but you still don’t have a proper and stable job, or if you are still a student, where studies are currently your priority, it is not practical, because you are not yet prepared for married life. If you know that you are in the season to pursue a woman, pray to God for a wife. Pursuing a woman to become your wife is something that we should never exclude God from. You should include God in your relationship from the moment you pray for her until the moment you get married, and until the end. You always depend on God at every step.

Now, when we mean “excellent,” we don’t mean a perfect wife without any flaws. A woman can be imperfect, but also be an excellent wife, a wife who fears the LORD, submits to her husband, and pursues Christlikeness. This kind of wife is granted to a man by God. It is a favor that comes from the giver of gifts—God. Regardless of a wife’s imperfections, we know that it is the perfect fit for us, because whatever gift God gives us, we can rest assured that it is a good one. That is why, if you want to have a wife, the essential thing to do is pray to God, as everything comes from the LORD, including an excellent wife.

We can observe from Abraham’s servant that he asked God to grant him success in his search for a wife for Isaac, and to guide him by letting whichever young woman gave him and his camels’ water be the one whom God has appointed for Isaac. Of course, that does not mean that the example of Abraham’s servant is normative. How do you pray for a godly spouse?

As mentioned above, you pray to God for a godly spouse by simply asking God, who is the source of everything. However, it is also essential to know what spouse to pray for. Obviously, as a Christian, you should pray for a godly spouse. You don’t want to pray for a spouse who isn’t godly and who might cause you to turn away from the faith. That is why the Bible is so strongly worded when it comes to the most important criteria for choosing a spouse: the person must be a fellow believer. If you are praying for a wife and are choosing a woman who might be a potential spouse, she must be a believer. Everything in your married life hinges upon this significant fact. Whether your marriage will be happy or not and godly or not depends on whether you marry an unbeliever or not. The Bible’s reasoning is simple: what business do we in the light have with those in darkness? Why would we who pursue living a holy life marry someone who does not care if they sin? Marrying an unbeliever has many negative implications. One example is when it comes to raising your future children. The Bible commands parents to train their children in the ways of God. How can you do that if you marry an unbeliever? What if you want to teach your kids the ways of God, but she wants to teach them things about her religion or beliefs? Even going to church can be a problem because she doesn’t share the same faith as you. Also, we can never expect an unbelieving wife to submit to us, as future husbands, if she has not submitted to Christ. We can also not expect her to love with a selfless kind of love if she has not first encountered it in Christ. Having different values will also make things harder for you as a Christian. You will want to always reach out to people, preach the Gospel to them, and be the salt and light to the world, while your wife holds different things in her heart. That is why a gorgeous intelligent, wealthy woman will never make your married life happy, if she is not a genuine follower of Christ. It will only make your married life miserable. You can avoid misery if you follow what the Bible prescribes and look for a woman who is a follower of Christ. 

Of course, it is not just enough that she is a “Christian”. That faith should also be evident in her life. She should be mature in her faith. We should see that a potential wife is indeed submitting her life to Christ, pursues to live a holy life, and makes disciples. A genuine Christian woman will fear God, making her a wise woman. This does not mean that you should look for a perfect wife. It only means that you have to be discerning when choosing one, even among women believers. That is why you pray to God for guidance and discernment. Now that you know this, these are the things you should pray for when considering a wife. If you are praying for these, you are expected to look for these things in any woman you consider pursuing.

Father in heaven, You have given us your Word and commanded us to follow it because it is for our own good. Give me the grace to obey Your Word and only pray and pursue a woman who is a follower of Christ. Guide me as I choose to not only settle for a woman who claims to be a Christian, but a woman whose faith is evident in how she lives her life. I pray for a woman who delights in the fear of You. In such a case, remember that a life of celibacy is not any lesser than being married. Whether you are called to be married or celibate, you have to first discern this through consulting with God.
