How To Start Praying As A Couple

Making the decision to start praying as a couple is the right way to empower your marriage in Christ, make a godly path for your children and the next generation, create a home with a heavenly atmosphere, and have a marriage that Satan extremely fears.

When a couple starts praying together, God can start speaking His heart for them and His plans for their marriage and family, exposing the enemy’s schemes, and giving His divine instructions and wisdom, which are crucial in the journey of faith.

To start praying as a couple, here are some methods according to Scripture:

1. Set a daily schedule to pray together and commit all things to the Lord.

Psalm 37:5 says, “Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.”

As a married couple, you can be very busy attending to many things during the day. However, this is not an excuse for you to not leave time to pray together and talk to God. Psalm 37:5 is a great reminder that, despite the busy day and daily plannings in life, the most important thing is to commit all your ways to God and trust in Him so that whatever plans you have, He’s got your blessing, and He will bring it to pass. Setting a specific time of the day to pray together is important.

Heavenly Father, thank You for giving us this day to pray together and hear Your voice. We lay all our plans before You and the burdens we carry in each one’s heart and mind. Thank You, for we can depend on and trust in You to fulfill Your good plans for our lives and our family in Jesus’ name. Amen.

2. Stay consistent in praying together.

Romans 12:12 says, “Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer”

Setting a specific time to pray isn’t enough when there is no consistency or commitment. Romans 12:12 specifically mentions you are to be constant in your prayer life no matter how busy you are during the day. Prayer is your divine appointment with God when He can speak to you and reveal and expose things to you to prepare you for each day’s battles. After all, marriage, family, work, business, and ministry life are not just ordinary journeys for a Christian but a daily battlefield where the enemy can attack at any time and from any angle. You must be consistent in your praying together as a couple every single day.

Heavenly Father, thank You for giving us this opportunity to come together and pray together. As we consistently come in agreement before You, thank You for hearing our prayers according to Your will in Jesus’ name. Amen.

3. Pray for each other.

Ephesians 6:18

“Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints”

As you start praying as a couple and talking to God about the things that concern your heart – praising, thanking, and worshiping Him at the same time – you may also take this as an opportunity to pray for each other. Praying for each other, as Ephesians 6:18 instructs, strengthens the union of your marriage as you speak life, encouragement, peace, and hope to each other. There will also be times when the Holy Spirit will cause you to intercede for your husband or wife as you pray in the Spirit. Praying for each other plays an integral part in your marriage, just as praying together as a couple does.

Heavenly Father, thank You for my husband. He is a gift and a great blessing in my life and in this home. Thank You for giving him strength daily, protecting him from harm, and making Your face shine upon him always in Jesus’ name. Amen.

4. Be transparent before one another and God.

Proverbs 28:13

“He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.”

Psalm 66:18

“If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me”

When you pray together before God, you must be both open and ready to communicate and be transparent with one another and with God. Proverbs 28:13 and Psalm 66:18 say that hiding any heart issues and sin can hinder one’s prayer because the Lord will not hear it, and those who cover their sins won’t prosper in all their ways. As you come before the Lord in prayer, agree in your heart and mind to be open and transparent without fear of punishment or rejection. After all, God’s Spirit is always there when two hearts are sincere in humility and repentance.

Heavenly Father, thank You for hearing our prayers as we lay our hearts open before You. We humbly ask for Your forgiveness for the times when we are emotionally unavailable to each other and when we do not take the time to truly understand each other. Thank You for clearing our communication line and for empowering our union as we ask for Your help in Jesus’ name, Amen.

5. Always pray with thanksgiving and gratitude to God and for each other.

1 Thessalonians 5:18 says, “In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”

As 1 Thessalonians 5:18 says, in everything give thanks, for such is the will of God for your lives as a couple. So, when you pray together, think about the many things that you can be thankful to God for. Being thankful to the Father, as well as your spouse, empowers marriage and brings wholeness to the soul.

Heavenly Father, thank You for Who You are and for always being faithful in our lives. You are our safe place, and we give You all the glory in this marriage. I am also thankful for my spouse, who has been such a great blessing in my life. I pray that You always bless, keep, and favor her in Jesus’ name. Amen.
