A Prayer for Healthcare Workers

As of the time of this article’s writing, it has already been three years since the Covid-19 pandemic started. Things are already pretty much back to normal. However, during the pandemic, people realized many things, one of which is how essential healthcare workers are to society. If you are a healthcare worker, people have seen the selfless service and sacrifice you give to care for those who are sick and in need of medical attention. However, they have also learned about your challenges, difficulties, and needs.

Father in heaven, just as we help take good care of other people’s health, help us as well, Father. Look after and care for us just as we have done for our patients. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

What Can Healthcare Workers Pray For?

As a healthcare worker, you have needs or things you are concerned with, and those are the very things that you can pray for. In 1 Peter 5:6-7, it is written that we are to humble ourselves before the mighty hand of God. Humbling ourselves means we don’t take our needs and concerns into our own hands but acknowledge that we are dependent on God. That is why, if we humble ourselves, we cast our cares and anxieties to God, knowing He also cares for us. (Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you. 1 Peter 5:6-7)

One of the things that you can pray for as a healthcare worker is your safety. Working in the healthcare industry poses an occupational risk. For example, you may get an infection when dealing with patients with a contagious disease, and that is why proper protocols are observed. You may still get exposed to biological, chemical, or biochemical hazards. Even violence and harassment are not an exception. Though those risks are relatively low, depending on where you work, they are still risks. Therefore, praying for your safety is always a good prayer point.

Another good prayer point to have as a healthcare worker is to be excellent and competent in your work. Whether you are a nurse, doctor, therapist, or even a member of the non-medical staff in a hospital, what you do could mean life or death for a patient. Any mistake could be dangerous for a person. Likewise, as you pursue competence in what you do, you could help those who need medical help, and that kind of help has always proven to be invaluable. God, in His sovereign care for others, uses you and your profession to bring physical healing and restoration to other people. You pursue excellence not just because it is a job or profession but because it is a ministry where you ultimately serve God (Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God. 1 Corinthians 10:31).

In line with that, you can pray that you will always be the salt and light in the healthcare industry (Matthew 5:13-16). Yes, you can help others physically and medically; however, this doesn’t address the spiritual. Treatments and medicines may heal and address the physical aspect, but they will never address the spiritual aspect of sin, humanity’s worst sickness. As a believer, you have the only solution for the problem of sin, which is the Gospel. You become the salt and light to your patients and fellow professionals by preaching the Gospel and reflecting Christ to them through how you minister or serve them and live your life. You can, therefore, pray for the grace to be faithful in being the salt and light where you are and witness Christ to others.

How Can a Healthcare Worker Pray?

You can pray by lifting to God the concerns, cares, burdens, and any other prayer requests you have. You can be honest with God and approach Him as a Father as you tell Him of the cares and concerns that you have. For example, if you are wary of the risks in your work, you can pray and ask Him to protect you.

We have mentioned above some prayers you can pray for safety, the grace to be excellent in your profession, and the grace to be the salt and light. However, there are many other concerns that you can pray for. For example, if your salary is low, you can pray for a salary increase. You can first think of your concerns or prayer requests as a healthcare worker and then present them all to God in prayers (Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7).

Heavenly Father, as a nurse, protect me from all occupational risks, especially from being infected by whatever pathogens could infect me. I pray that everyone in the hospital will observe proper protocols. Help me also to be excellent in what I do and help sick patients recover by giving them excellent care. Give me the boldness to preach the Gospel to others, pray for their healing, and point them to Christ.

If you are in Christ, you can be confident that you have a heavenly Father Who looks after You. No matter what anxieties we may have, we can trust God because He is a God Who holds all things together and is sovereign over everything. Also, knowing that God is faithful helps our hearts always to be firm.
