How To Pray For A Job You Want

We all have our dream jobs, or at least a preferred kind of job to accept. Some of us go to a particular school or pursue a certain degree so that we can do the job and start the career we prefer. Sometimes, we end up being on a different path, applying for jobs that we didn’t expect we would be applying for. It does not matter if the job is within our preferences or not; regardless of whether or not the job is something we prefer, want, or dream of, there is usually a particular job we are looking at among our many possible choices.

Father in heaven, I thank You because Your providential hand is always at work in my life and guides me wherever I go. Wherever I end up working, it means that You have sovereignly placed me there. Help me to be faithful wherever You would place me. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Can I Pray for the Job I Want?

Suppose there is a particular job that we want. Can we pray and ask God for that particular job as we apply or take steps to be qualified for it? Absolutely yes!

Some believers would ask why we should pray for something we want or pray for anything at all if God is sovereign over everything. He sovereignly rules over everything, as written in Psalm 97. Because God is in control of everything, some people think that praying is pointless; that in His infinite wisdom, our sovereign God will just do what He wants.

If we apply that line of thinking to the job we hope to have, why should we pray since, in the end, God will just do what He wants to do? While indeed there is some truth in that line of thinking, God is sovereign and works all things according to the counsel of His will, as written in (In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will: Ephesians 1:11). However, we also have to understand that God also uses our prayers to bring about His will.

For example, if God wants a person to be saved, He uses our preaching of the Gospel to bring that unbelieving person to Christ. We cannot say it is okay not to preach the Gospel because God is sovereign and can lead people to Christ on His own. God can, but God, in His sovereignty, uses our preaching of the Gospel to accomplish His will of bringing people to Christ.

Just because God is sovereign does not mean that our prayers are useless. We should pray all the more, knowing that God ordains and uses our prayers to cause certain things to happen. That is why we should make intercessions, prayers, and supplications for all, such as the government, society, the lost, the church, our loved ones, etc., as written in (I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; 1 Timothy 2:1).

The same can be said when we pray to ask for the job we want. We do this because it is through our asking for that particular job that we get to receive it. That is why in (Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not. James 4:2), it is written that we sometimes do not have because we do not ask. Prayers are not useless; rather, they are powerful. In ( Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. James 5:16), it is written that prayer has power and is effective. God uses our prayers to cause things to happen, and that includes us receiving the job that we want if that is God’s will.

How Can I Pray for the Job I Want?

You can pray for the job you want by asking God for His perspective on that job. Is there a particular job opening that you wish to be able to apply for and hopefully get? Pray and ask God for it in prayer. Sometimes, you can also ask God for wisdom on how to apply for the job you want. For example, let’s say you want to become an aviation mechanic, yet you don’t know how to apply for that position, where to go to enquire about it, and whom you should approach. To be able to apply and hopefully get the job you want, you should first know where and to whom to apply. You can ask God for help, wisdom and open doors in the matter.

Also, you can pray to and ask God for the job you want by asking Him to help prepare you for that particular job. Even if there are open doors or job openings for that particular job that you want, you won’t be selected if you are underqualified or cannot even do the job. Just as you pray and ask God for a specific job that you want, also pray that you will be the right person for the job and can do it excellently and competently.

Heavenly Father, I am praying to become a lawyer in a firm here in our city. I saw a job opening, and I am about to apply for that position. I hope to get the position and work in the job I have always dreamed of. Help me be competent enough so that I may be seen as the right person. Give me the wisdom and skills that I need for this. Teach my heart to be humble regardless of the outcome and remember that everything works together for my good. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

It is important to note that praying and asking God for your desired job does not mean you will be certain to get it. God is God, not a genie. When you don’t get what you want, it is not because God is a cosmic killjoy. He is an infinitely wise and all-knowing God Who loves you. God never deprives us of anything good. In fact, in Matthew 7:11 it is written that God only gives good gifts to His children. In (Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. James 1:17), it is also written that all good gifts come from God, Who is our Father. Finally, ( The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger: but they that seek the Lord shall not want any good thing. Psalm 34:10) says that if we seek God in Christ, we shall lack no good thing. Whether we get the job that we want, do not get any job, or get a different job than the one we wanted, our assurance and comfort is that God gives us what is good for us because He loves us.
