A Christian Prayer for America

The United States of America is an undeniably powerful country, if not the most powerful nation in the world. It is powerful in terms of military might and other aspects like its economy and culture. America is also powerful in that it has significant influence over other countries. This influence is not necessarily political, but primarily cultural. That is why if American culture, vices, and other sins become normal, as shown in American TV shows and movies, then there is a huge chance that people of other nations will also sway towards this and emulate these beliefs, because American culture is so influential. Take a look at the majority of the most famous movies ever created. Most of them are from America. We should always pray for America because it is a key nation influencing many other countries. Of course, you also want to pray for America because you love your country and seek its well-being. It is written in Jeremiah 29:7 and 1 Timothy 2:1-4:

Jeremiah 29:7

And seek the peace of the city whither I have caused you to be carried away captives, and pray unto the Lord for it: for in the peace thereof shall ye have peace.

1 Timothy 2:1-4

I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;

2 For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.

3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;

4 Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.

How do we pray for America?

It is entirely different if you compare America today to America during the early 19th century. Not just economically and militarily, but also when it comes to values.

Culture plays a big part in the values that a person holds. That is why we want to pray for America’s culture. Males and females should appreciate each other’s differences rather than trying to be or replace the other; gender identity is not based on what you feel you are.

You can say this prayer for America’s culture:

Heavenly Father, I pray for the culture of America, and pray that its values that are right in Your eyes shall be restored. I pray, Father, that American culture will be more logical and rational and that their feelings and emotions are not the forces that dictate their values. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Another thing you can pray for is the so-called “American dream”. The “American dream” in a nutshell consists of achieving your goals or being successful, regardless of your country of origin, race, ethnicity, or class. The problem is that most of these people view success as having lots of money, a nice mansion, lots of property, and many more worldly things they see as idols. As Christians there is much more to our lives than material things.

1 Timothy 6:10

For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

John 4:14

But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

Galatians 5:22

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,

James 1:2-3

2 My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations;

3 Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.

Psalm 16:11

Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.

Here is a prayer you can say for those who are chasing the “American dream”:

Father in heaven, I pray for those who are chasing the “American dream” that they will get to encounter Christ in their life and realize the truth that money, properties, and other possessions will never satisfy them. Even the acceptance and affirmation of other people won’t satisfy. Only Christ, who is the living water, can save them. Open their spiritually blinded eyes so that they may see Christ and who He is and witness that in Him we have joy. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

How do you pray for the US government?

Another aspect you can pray for is the US government. The government has a significant influence over whether something evil will prosper or not. The government’s leadership is one aspect for which you should pray. You can say this prayer for the US government:

Father in heaven, I pray for the US government to always enact legislation and policies that honor You. Cause them to do what is right in Your eyes and not condone things that are not just evil in Your sight, but also irrational and illogical. I pray for the government officials and personnel to have the opportunity to hear the Gospel, such that they shall repent from sin and follow Christ. I pray that they shall not be consumed with greed and corruption, but that they shall always govern with integrity and fulfill the purpose You have for them, which is to be the sword that executes justice and punishes evil—Your appointed servants and ministers. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Sadly, many people complain about America, especially regarding the government. All that you hear sometimes is grumbling and complaining. However, as Christians, grumbling and complaining should not be in our hearts and mouths, but only gratitude. Also, instead of always grumbling and complaining about the government, we should speak life, honor them, and pray for them. That is the God-honoring we can have. That does not mean that we should be unrealistic about our government. Indeed, we have to tackle issues regarding them, but if everything that comes out of your mouth about the government is negative, then there is something wrong.
