How to Know if You are a Prayer Warrior

When we hear of “prayer warrior,” it is a nice term we want to find ourselves living out. Most especially if any believer can be one. However, becoming a prayer warrior and knowing if you are one is not as complicated as you might think. Just like Christ answers the question, “How do I know if I am a child of God?” The same goes for the question, “How do I know if I am a prayer warrior?”. The answer still lies in the Gospel, just as every other question that we have in life does.

Heavenly Father, I thank You because it is not by my merit that I am a prayer warrior. It is still the fruit of Your grace that is at work in me through the Gospel of Your Son, Jesus Christ. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

How Do I Know That I Am a Prayer Warrior?

If you are in Christ and you are prayerful, then you are already a prayer warrior. At times, we connote the terms “prayer warrior” and “intercessors” to Christians whom we think of as special in a way that there is just something in their prayers that moves mountains, has power, and makes an impact. However, the truth is that you don’t have to be labeled as a prayer warrior or an intercessor for you to be able to do the same.

If you are in Christ, you become a child of God and have access to God’s throne of grace (John 1:12-13; (Hebrews 4:16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.). In (James 5:16 Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.), it is written that the prayer of the righteous person is powerful and working. We usually associate that with prayer warriors, but the truth is, if you are in Christ, you are already righteous. In (1 Corinthians 1:30  But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:), it is written that Christ is our righteousness and sanctification and redemption. If being in Christ makes you righteous, then your prayers also have power and are also working.

Heavenly Father, I thank You for giving us Your Son Jesus and working in our hearts that we may be in Him, who is our righteousness, sanctification, and redemption. In Christ, my prayers reach You, which have power as I confidently enter Your throne of grace through the blood of Christ and pray. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Of course, a prayer warrior is not only one who is in Christ but also one who prays. You may be in Christ and made righteous, which makes your prayers powerful and working, but nothing happens if you don’t pray. A soldier is not a full-fledged soldier if he trains and does not get deployed. Hence, if you are in Christ and that you are praying, you are already a prayer warrior.

Top 3 Disciplines of a Prayer Warrior

Any warrior has a strict discipline that they follow. It could be a diet discipline since warriors or soldiers need proper nutrition, contributing to their fitness. It could also be physical discipline in which they set times to train with their fellow soldiers to ensure that they don’t get rusty and are always sharp when it comes to the executions of the missions that they are doing. Likewise, a prayer warrior also has or must have some habits. If these habits are absent, it is very difficult to be a prayer warrior.

In 1 Corinthians 9:24-27, the apostle Paul writes to the church in Corinth that we are to be disciplined as we run the race of faith. The “running of the race” was attributed by Paul to athletes. Also, we Christians run the race aiming to reach the end, which is eternity with God. That does not mean we do good work to get eternal life. In Christ, we already have eternal life. Because we are saved, we do good work until the time comes that we get to be with God face to face. If we have given our lives to Christ and we are living our lives or running the race for Him, we would want to do it faithfully, and that is where discipline is important. Like any athlete, we need spiritual discipline as we run the race faithfully, and one of the many things we do is be prayer warriors.

With that, the top three disciplines that a prayer warrior has are:

  1. Being disciplined in prayer
  2. Being disciplined in reading and studying the Scriptures
  3. Being in constant fellowship with fellow believers

It is obvious on why being disciplined in prayer is important. Praying is what a prayer warrior does, meaning making time to pray despite one’s busy schedule. Scripture reading is also essential. If we want to pray prayers that align with God’s will, which is good, pleasing, and perfect, then there is no better source than His revealed will, which is His Word (Psalms 119:105; (Romans 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.). Also, being a prayer warrior means you need to have fellow prayer warriors who will pray with you and for you. That is why being part of a church community is very important.

If you have observed, these disciplines are not even the essential disciplines of a prayer warrior but of any other believer. As believers, we cannot survive this Christian life if we don’t pray to God, feed in His Word, and be part of a church community, for no sheep can survive on its own. As you meditate on the Gospel and your identity in Christ, pray to God and exercise the disciplines mentioned, you are already a prayer warrior.
