The Power Of Prayer

Prayer has been defined in many ways. It is the opening of the soul to God. It is communication with the Creator of the Universe. It is also listening to the words of God. The power of prayer is reflected in the many examples of answers to prayer which are provided throughout the verses of Scripture. Although it is not a magic bullet, prayer can accomplish tasks which are impossible through human capabilities.

God uses prayer to converse with us about what He wants for us. It is also our opportunity to tell Him about our daily needs and wants. We can ask in prayer for items for ourselves or for  others. In fact, we are directed to act in intercessory prayer practices. The sincere prayers of a righteous person for others enables God to act on their behalf. We think of parents praying for a wayward child or children praying for friends.

God has promised that prayers offered in the name of Jesus will be heard. This is a powerful experience to fully grasp the importance of our communication with God through the act of prayer. The Bible tells us that when two or three believers request something of God in sincerity and according to His will, it will be granted.

In the Bible, the examples of how powerful prayer can be are numerous. The dead were raised, the sick healed, metal ax heads caused to float and bitter water made potable. The blind received their eyesight and a few morsels of food fed a throng of thousands. Even the storm on the Sea of Galilee was calmed.

Joseph and Daniel both asked in prayer for the ability to interpret dreams and their prayers were granted. Prophets in Old Testament times were able to even request God to cause the sun to move backward in its course. The cessation of the earth’s rotation is an amazing example of the power of prayer.

In our daily lives, we might not personally experience such amazing examples of how powerful prayer can be. We can, however, enjoy the ability to communicate our needs, wants and concerns to God and know that He is listening.
