How To Pray As A Christian Woman

Prayer is not just important but essential in the life of a Christian. To live a life without prayer is to live a life without communing with God. There are many ways in which God gives us grace, and prayer is one of them. That is why, if we have weaknesses or challenges in life and we need God’s grace, it is hard to imagine being able to go through those things if we don’t pray at all. In other words, prayer is expected of a Christian woman; not just because God commanded it but also because she needs it.

Heavenly Father, remind me of the essence of prayer and why I should never neglect it. Give me the grace to keep my spiritual discipline and to always fight for my prayer time with You. It is not about being religious but about enjoying solitude with You, my heavenly Father. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

What Does the Bible Say About Prayer?

Prayer is expected of us because God deserves to be worshiped (Psalm 96:9 O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness: fear before him, all the earth. ). One way we worship God is by praying to Him. The Bible also commands us to pray to God. Philippians 4:6-7 states that if we are anxious or have prayer requests, we are to lift them to God, Who guards our hearts and minds with peace that transcends all understanding. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 also tells us to pray to God without ceasing. ( Luke 18:1 And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint;) teaches us to be persistent in prayer and never lose heart. Also, in Matthew 6:6, when Jesus was about to teach His disciples how to pray, He used the phrase “and when you pray,” not “and if you pray,” implying that we are expected to pray.

Psalm 96:9 O worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness: fear before him, all the earth.

The same chapter, Matthew 6, teaches us how to pray as a Christian. As a Christian, you should not pray as hypocrites or unbelievers do. They pray in public so that they may be seen by other people and make a good impression of themselves. Jesus, however, said that when we pray, we are to pray in secret, where God sees in secret. There we will have our reward with God, for God sees in secret. In fact, intimacy with God when we pray this way is already the greatest reward. That does not mean, however, that all prayers done in public are bad. The point here is that when you pray as a Christian woman, you don’t pray to impress but to spend intimate time with God.

In the succeeding verses, verses 7 and 8, Jesus also teaches that we are not to pray like the Gentiles, heaping up empty phrases thinking that God will hear them because we pray many words. Praying certain words or phrases emptily – or saying them just for the sake of saying them, without meaning them, and thinking that this will make our prayers heard – is what Jesus is teaching against. As a Christian woman, you don’t pray to be heard. Your prayers are already heard if you are in Christ. You pray out of your relationship with God and mean every word you say. It is not a religious act but a relational one; that means not merely repeating certain concerns, phrases, or bad things. For example, if safety is your concern every day, then every day, you pray for it. Even if you repeatedly pray for safety, it is fine as long as you mean it. That’s not the same as saying it just for the sake of saying it, like a routine that is heaping up empty phrases.

How Do I Pray as a Christian Woman?

You pray not out of religiosity but out of relationship. That is what mainly separates a Christian woman from unbelievers. You don’t pray from the position of praying so that you can work your way up to God. In Christ, by Whom you are already adopted as God’s children, your prayers are already heard (Romans 8:16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:). Christ has already torn the veil and destroyed the dividing wall of hostility between God and you (Ephesians 2:14-16). So, it is important to know that praying as a Christian woman means approaching God’s throne of grace with respect and reverence before God, knowing that the God Whom you revere is also your heavenly Father (Hebrews 4:16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.).

Father in heaven, thank You for the grace and mercy that You have been showing me every day of my life. Thank You for always being faithful even though sometimes I commit mistakes. I pray for the strength that I need always to do Your will. Help me grow more in Christlikeness. I pray for the provision that I need for the certain expenses that I have. Open my eyes so that I may see more of Your glory and always behold Your beauty. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

It is also important to note that you are a princess of God if you are in Christ. While indeed we should show reverence to God as He is the Almighty God, at the same time, He is our heavenly Father. Such is the wonder of the work of Christ, reconciling you to the Father. So, prayer is never meant to earn God’s favor.
