How To Pray For A Settlement

A settlement is an agreement between two parties that is designed to resolve whatever dispute they have so they don’t have to go to court. While it is indeed a good thing for a dispute to be settled without having to go to trial in court, it is still something that lawyers should work on with competence. It should be treated as a serious matter because justice may not be served when one of the parties receives the short end of the stick when it comes to the settlement.

Heavenly Father, I thank You because we do not have to go to trial with the dispute that we have right now. I pray that my lawyer works diligently on our settlement and we will receive justice in the end. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Why Should You Pray for a Settlement?

We always pray for the things that are essential in our lives. Suppose a corporate executive is at a crossroads where he or she has to make an important decision that would undoubtedly impact the company’s well-being, direction, and future. Indeed, that executive will be praying for wisdom in his or her decision. The point is that we pray for important things in life, and a settlement is an essential matter for a person. As mentioned before, while the issue may not be going to trial, it is still a dispute that has to be agreed on between two parties. So, we pray for a settlement.

If you are the accused or the defendant in a dispute, especially if it is an honest mistake that resulted in a lawsuit, going for a settlement is, in most cases, in your best interest. The compensation you have to make for the damages as a result of a settlement might be more severe if you went to court. That is why we should pray for the dispute not to go to trial but for it to end with a fair settlement.

However, whether you are the plaintiff and someone has wronged you, or you are the defendant that someone is suing, going to trial is not always the best option. One of the things that lawyers look at is the probability of winning the case if a dispute is brought to trial. Just because a party is in the right does not necessarily mean they will win the case. Depending on so many factors, a plaintiff, despite being in the right, could gain nothing if they lose the trial. Likewise, a defendant could get more mercy through a settlement compared to losing a trial. So, sometimes settlement is the best option to pray for.

Also, you pray for the settlement itself to be fair. While you pray for a fair judgment from the judge and jury if you are on trial, you also pray for this when it comes to a settlement. You are praying for fairness when it comes to the terms of the settlement. For example, if you are suing someone for certain damages, you want to receive just compensation for your losses. Likewise, if you must give reparations for damages, you don’t want to have to compensate with a greater amount than is fair.

How Do You Pray for a Settlement?

As you pray for a settlement, you ask God to let justice roll down like water on the settlement in progress. Any specific prayer concern can spring from praying for justice to abound. It may be praying for your lawyers to have the grace and wisdom they need to come up with terms for the settlement that would be favorable to you and the other party—a win-win settlement. You can also pray for the other party not to be greedy in demanding more compensation from you than what is justly required. In other words, you pray for a settlement by praying for your concerns.

In Philippians 4:6-7 it is written that we are to present to God our prayer requests. This means that whatever concerns we have regarding our ongoing settlement, we are to surrender them to God in prayer. The Bible says that as we do that, His peace, which guards all understanding, shall guard our hearts and minds. Also, in (Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. 1 Peter 5:6-7), it is written that we are to humble ourselves and cast our cares to God. This means that whatever concerns, worries, and fears we have regarding our ongoing settlement, we are not to keep them to ourselves but rather cast them to God, Who cares for us.

Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. 1 Peter 5:6-7

Father in heaven, I pray for my ongoing settlement with someone I am suing for damages. I pray that You will give my lawyers the wisdom they need to convince the other party to settle and not let our dispute reach the courts. I also pray that the settlement we agree to will be fair for both parties and that the other party won’t compensate for less than they should. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Regardless of the outcome of the settlement, our confidence is that everything works together for the good of those who love God, as written in ( And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who  have been called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28). From the moment the settlement is processed up until it is done, God’s providential hand is always at work. What is meant for evil against us is also used by God for our good. We can be confident and trust God throughout the settlement process because He is sovereign. Because of that, we can pray confidently to God regarding our settlement.
