A Farmer’s Prayer For Rain

Rain is essential for farmers because all crops need water. Plants or crops survive by getting water and other nutrients they need. A farmer would ideally farm near a water source, such as a river to use the water for irrigation. However, whether a farmer farms near a water source or not, rain is still a big help, especially if the water source dries up at certain seasons due to the climate or temperature, such as the drought farmers often experience in the southern states.

Father in heaven, everything comes from You, even the rain that sustains our crops. We pray for rain, especially in this hot season, so that our crops won’t go to waste. Sustain us and our crops with Your grace. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

How Do You Pray for Rain?

You pray for rain by simply asking God for rain to come. In (James 4:2 Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.), it is written that sometimes we do not have things because we do not ask for them. While, indeed, God is sovereign and knows everything even before a word is in our mouth, we should still come to God’s throne of grace (Hebrews 4:16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.) and ask Him for the grace and mercy we need.

James 4:2 Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.

Even though God already knows everything that we are going to say in our prayers, He still wants us to come before Him and ask Him because in Christ He is our heavenly Father. It is not just a matter of asking but a matter of relationship. We see Him as our heavenly Father, and because of that, we run to Him Who is our refuge (Psalm 46:1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.) if we need rain or water for our crops.

Also, God wants us to come to Him in prayer because He wants us to humble ourselves before Him. In (1 Peter 5:6-7 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.), it is written that we are to humble ourselves and cast our cares to God, Who cares for us Himself. Sometimes, we depend on ourselves and try to handle things independently. However, God does not want us to depend on ourselves when difficulties come. Difficulties in life show us that it is only God on Whom we can depend. It takes humility to acknowledge that and come to God to cast our cares and concerns on Him, knowing that He also cares for us.

That is why we pray for rain by simply asking God from a position of humility, knowing that He is our heavenly Father.

Also, you may pray specific prayer points for the arrival of rain to benefit your crops. Beyond the mere occurrence of rain, pray that the rain will not only come but also effectively nourish and nurture the crops you’re cultivating. This involves incorporating the concept of irrigation, where farmers implement well-designed water systems to direct rainwater to their crops.

In your prayers, you may pray for two main aspects: first, pray for the controlled and efficient application of rainwater through your irrigation system. Be cautious of potential overflow during heavy rainfall, as this could harm rather than nurture your crops. Second, pray for the rain to genuinely nurture and foster the growth of your crops. This prayer seeks divine wisdom in establishing an effective irrigation system while acknowledging your dependence on God’s guidance for its success. It’s a balance between taking necessary actions and trusting in God’s providence for the overall well-being of your crops.

Below is an example of a farmer’s prayer for rain:

Heavenly Father, I ask for rain to come in this season of drought. Sustain us and our crops with Your grace by sending rain that will nurture and help our crops grow. I also pray that You would give me the wisdom to supply an efficient water irrigation system for my crops so that it will efficiently nurture them when the rain comes. May the rain that comes and the water irrigation system I put in nourish my crops. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Praying or asking God for the rain to come is really asking God for His grace. Our confidence is that if God has sustained you throughout this time, He will sustain you no matter what the future holds. The LORD is your shepherd, Who leads you and takes care of you. Whether the rain comes or not, you can rest assured that you are in good hands with the sovereign God.
