A Good Prayer To Say When Someone Dies

Death is a reality that all of us will face at the end of our lives here on earth. It is the consequence of sin entering the world due to the fall (Gen 3). Devastation, extreme grief, and brokenness are what you may experience if you lose a loved one but are not believers, simply because you don’t understand the concept of eternal life. Non-believers don’t know Christ. However, for those of us who are in Christ, we see death differently. We see it as a dark (yet conquered) tunnel that brings us into the presence of our master, Jesus Christ.

Heavenly Father, I thank You for giving up Your Son, Jesus, whose work on the cross not only resulted in our adoption as Your forgiven sons and daughters but also gave eternal life to anyone who believes. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

What Does The Bible Say About Death?

In this article, when we talk about death, we are explicitly referring to dying and not the eternal kind of death that one who is not in Christ experiences in hell. While we can indeed pray to God for healing, healing does not always happen. Death is a reality in our fallen world, one which we all have to face someday. This is where the very important question comes: are we in Christ?

Those who are not in Christ will face not only physical death but also an eternal death where they shall be eternally separated from God and sent to hell, where grace and hope are not present. However, those who are in Christ and place their faith in His atonement on the cross shall receive eternal life from Christ and are adopted as God’s children. They are transformed to be more like Christ day by day (Philippians 1:6 Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:)

(Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.)(John 3:16). In John 11:25, Jesus tells us that He is the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in Him shall not die, and will avoid eternal death.

Christ conquered death when He resurrected from the dead. That is why, if we are in Christ, we shall also resurrect from the dead since Christ has already conquered death. This is where the verse in (1 Corinthians 15:55 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?) comes into focus, where death no longer stings us. That is why Paul said in Philippians 1:21 that to live is to be in Christ. While he lives, he is going to live for Christ. It is actually a gain if he dies, for he then gets to be with Christ.

1 Corinthians 15:55 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?

As written in Isaiah 25:6-9, we can have a feast and enjoy ourselves. Specifically, we should feast on Christ and enjoy all the spiritual benefits found within Him, knowing that there is nothing in this world that could harm us, not even death nor sin, for even bad things work for the good of those who love God, whom He has called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.).

These truths imply that, as believers, when someone dies, we should not be devastated in the sense that we feel despair. Instead, we can feel joy in knowing that the fellow brother or sister we know in Christ who just died is now together with his or her Lord Jesus Christ in the flesh. It is more of a time of celebration, wherein we celebrate someone’s passing to glory and the life that the person has lived while he or she was still with us. Indeed, where is death’s sting? Even when someone dies, we don’t despair or allow ourselves to be consumed with grief.

How Do You Say A Good Prayer When Someone Dies?

When someone dies, you can pray to God, whether as an individual or with other believers, offering a prayer of gratitude where you thank God for the life of the person who passed away. Remember that we are celebrating the life of someone who passed on to glory. You can thank God for the impact the deceased person has had on other people and the qualities you look up to in that person, such as being a good example to others, his or her faithfulness in running the race, etc. Also, you can say a prayer of comfort, especially for the immediate family of the person who just passed away.

It is also essential to remember that while grief is one of our emotions, we should not pray from the standpoint of defeat. Instead, we should pray from the position of victory. Remember that death has already lost its power. A person’s entire existence doesn’t disappear when they die. He or she is now together with Christ and has finished faithfully running the race.

Father in heaven, thank You for blessing us with the life of [name of the deceased person]. It has been a joy to witness how he ran the race faithfully until the end, persevering through difficulties and giving glory to Your name with every ministry he performed. The wisdom that his life has given us is something we will always carry. We also pray for comfort for his friends and family, as we shall surely miss him. Bring peace upon their hearts and pour out Your mercies upon them. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

In Christ, we have nothing to fear, not even death itself. In Him, we have found life where we will not only become like Christ but we will also have glorified bodies (Philippians 3:21). We will get to be with Christ in heaven where pain, hunger, and sin do not exist (Revelation 21:4). Such is our glorious future in Christ.
