How To Be A Prayer Warrior

A prayer warrior is someone who knows that spiritual warfare is real and who is willing to stand in the gap for the people through prayer. A prayer warrior is someone who is spiritually strong in discernment and has the gift to sense activities in the spiritual realm; he or she is also rooted in and knowledgeable about the Word of God and, most of all, one who has an intimate relationship with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. A prayer warrior, just like Jesus Christ, pleads on behalf of people before the throne room of Abba’s grace. Hebrews 4:14-15 (NKJV) says, “Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.”

As you are here looking for how to be a prayer warrior, know that such a desire is gravely needed in the Body of Christ. Your life is a blessing, and the Holy Spirit is here to help you in this journey.

Here are some of the things you must keep in mind and put into practice if you want to be a powerful prayer warrior:

1. Spend a lot of time studying the Word of God and meditating on heavenly things.

Hebrews 4:12 says, “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” If you are a prayer warrior, the Word of God is your foundation, and all your principles, values, and perspectives in life must be aligned with it so that you can hear God’s voice clearly and be able to distinguish between the flesh, the enemy, and the Spirit. The more time you spend studying and meditating on God’s Word, the more you are sharpening your spiritual senses, which is crucial as an intercessor.

Heavenly Father, thank You that as I spend time studying and meditating on Your Word, my inner man is strengthened and sharpened. And the foundation of my faith, prayer life, and walk with You is rooted and founded according to Your will in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Heavenly Father, thank You that as I spend time studying and meditating on Your Word, my inner man is strengthened and sharpened.

2. Stay humble and teachable before God and others.

Philippians 2:3-8 says that humility is considering others far above yourself because Jesus Christ, even though He was God, emptied Himself, walked in the form of a servant, and humbled Himself by being obedient even to the point of His death on the cross. To be a prayer warrior is to be an imitator of Jesus Christ. When you walk according to Christlikeness, you become a powerful and effective prayer warrior just like Jesus Christ. And staying humble and teachable before God and people is necessary if you want God to entrust you with powerful spiritual things. Pride is your worst enemy as a prayer warrior.

Holy Spirit, thank You for reminding me to walk in humility and love at all times. As I desire to be a prayer warrior, I thank You. Through Your help, my Heavenly Father will entrust to me greater things as I imitate Christ Jesus in all my ways in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Heavenly Father, thank You that as I spend time studying and meditating on Your Word, my inner man is strengthened and sharpened.

3. Walk according to your authority and identity in Christ.

Jesus Christ said in Matthew 18:18, “Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” This principle of binding and loosening is one of the most powerful ways to pray in Jesus’ name. For instance, you can bind peace into your home when there is strife and loosen whatever Satan is binding in your household. Jesus also said, “Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give” (Matthew 10:8).

Heavenly Father, thank You that as I spend time studying and meditating on Your Word, my inner man is strengthened and sharpened.

Lord Jesus, thank You for giving me so much power and authority against the works of the enemy. I am called to shine the light of Christ as I walk in my true identity and authority in Christ. Amen.

4. Always be led by the Holy Spirit.

Ephesians 6:18 says to pray in the Spirit at all times with all kinds of prayers and requests, being alert and persevering in prayer for all of God’s people. As a prayer warrior, your leader is the Holy Spirit. He prompts you about when to pray, what to pray, and how to pray. Sometimes, He may prompt you to pray in tongues; sometimes, He will give you words of wisdom, knowledge, and prophecy to utter in the spirit realm to pray for a person, event, or nation. Sometimes, it can be a specific scripture for you to pray over and declare. He may prompt you to pray in the morning, afternoon, or evening. Only the Holy Spirit knows these things, which is why you must yield to Him and be alert, persevering in your prayer life as a prayer warrior.

Holy Spirit, thank You for leading my prayer life. Thank You for prompting me and revealing to me the heart of the Father for my prayers. I humbly submit to Your will and Your ways in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Heavenly Father, thank You that as I spend time studying and meditating on Your Word, my inner man is strengthened and sharpened.

5. Walk in integrity and make the Lord your utmost delight.

A prayer warrior or an intercessor is known to be God’s best friend. This is because God entrusts His secrets to them; He doesn’t just reveal these to anyone, even if they are Christian. Christlike character and obedience to His Word are vital as a prayer warrior, similar to our discussion in point number two. When God sees that you can tame your tongue when He reveals something to you about a particular person, you must intercede without gossiping or revealing it to others, He entrusts you with more things to pray for. When you make the Lord your utmost delight and walk in integrity, He will give you your heart’s desire to be a powerful vessel as a prayer warrior. Psalm 37:4 says, “Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.”

6. Be willing to be inconvenienced and remain readily available to be used for the advancement of God’s Kingdom

As a prayer warrior, you can expect to stay awake all night until you tap into the things God wants you to pray for. You must be willing to be disturbed in your sleep when God wakes you in the middle of the night to intercede and stand in the gap for people. Sometimes, God will ask you to do things you may not like, such as approaching a person who dislikes you and offering them a prayer. As a prayer warrior, you must expect to be inconvenienced for the sake of others and stay out of your comfort zone so that God’s light and power may shine through you. Jesus Christ is the best example and model for this, as you can see and read His life in the Gospel. Galatians 6:2 says, “Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.”
