A Good Prayer for Anxiety

In our lives, anxiety often emerges as a common encounter, always finding its way into our experiences. Whether in work, studies, or ministry, the pressures of our daily lives, uncertainty about the future, and the complexities of relationships can cast shadows of worry over our hearts. In such moments, a steadfast anchor is found in prayer, where we get to communicate with our Heavenly Father. Turning to God in prayer before seeking other solutions is a principle deeply rooted in the Christian faith. We must learn the significance of seeking God first in times of anxiety and delving into the wisdom found in the pages of the Bible.

Heavenly Father, amid life’s anxieties, I turn to You. You are my refuge and strength. May Your peace, which surpasses all understanding, guard my heart and mind in Christ Jesus. Amen.

Why should we seek God first in times of anxiety?

In the swirl of anxious thoughts, the call to seek God first stands as a foundational biblical principle. (Matthew 6:33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.) encapsulates this beautifully, urging believers to “seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” This verse, spoken by Jesus Himself, underscores the priority of aligning our hearts with God’s will before pursuing other concerns.

When anxiety grips us, it often stems from a fixation on worldly matters—the pursuit of success, material possessions, or the approval of others. That is why, when problems related to anything of those come along, we are shaken. Seeking God first realigns our priorities, helping us focus on eternal values rather than transient worries. Proverbs 3:5-6 advises, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight paths.” This trust is the antidote to anxiety, as it redirects our gaze from the storm to the steadfastness of the Divine.

Heavenly Father, amid my anxiety, I choose to seek You first. Grant me the wisdom to trust in Your plan and not lean on my own understanding. As I acknowledge You in all my ways, make my paths straight and lead me in righteousness. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

We should also seek God first in times of anxiety because He should be the first to Whom we run in times of trouble. Whoever or whatever we frequent is what we worship. 2 Chronicles 20:4 depicts this for us. We see King Jehoshaphat and the kingdom of Judah seeking God when faced with a multitude of enemy armies. They didn’t turn to any temporal, human solution. They sought God first and remembered what He had done, what He could do, and what He would do while humbly admitting their helplessness against a vast army.

Father in heaven, in times of trouble, may seeking You always be my first response, for You are my refuge and my strong tower. Help me not to take shortcuts by relying first on my friends and my own wisdom for solving my problems. Instead, may I trust You and seek You first. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

How to pray in times of anxiety

Praying in times of anxiety involves surrendering our concerns to God while embracing His promises. Philippians 4:6-7 encourages believers, saying, “do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” This passage provides a blueprint for praying in times of anxiety. It invites us to bring our concerns to God with a spirit of gratitude, recognizing His sovereignty over our lives. In prayer, we exchange anxiety for peace, trusting that God’s understanding surpasses our own.

Additionally, the Psalms serve as a rich source of prayers that express the full spectrum of human emotions, including anxiety. Psalm 34:4 invites believers to “seek the Lord, and he will deliver you from all your fears.” Thus, our prayers in times of anxiety can include a plea for deliverance and confidence that God hears and responds to our cries.

Lord, in times of anxiety, I come before You with my burdens. I offer my prayers with thanksgiving, trusting that Your peace will guard my heart and mind. Let my worries be replaced with the assurance that You are in control. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

In seasons of anxiety, praying is a transformative journey. Seeking God first redirects our focus from the transient to the eternal, aligning our hearts with His sovereign will. It also shifts the focus from us to God, Who is the only One Who can help us. As we navigate the uncertainties of life, the words of Jesus tell us to prioritize the kingdom of God, trusting that all else will fall into place. We have a good, wise, and loving Father Who always does what is best for us.

When praying during anxious moments, Philippians 4:6-7 becomes a guiding principle, inviting us to present our requests to God with gratitude, experiencing His surpassing peace. The Psalms, reflective of diverse human experiences, offer prayers that resonate with our own struggles, reminding us to seek the Lord for deliverance from fear. May our prayers in times of anxiety be an offering of trust and surrender so we may have faith in the face of uncertainty. It is in the simplicity of seeking God first and the power of heartfelt prayers that we find solace, for He is our refuge and strength.
