A Bedtime Prayer Poem

Poetry is a good hobby for anyone. It allows a person to express something creatively. One good example of poetry in the Bible is the Psalms. King David expressed many things through the Psalms he wrote. Some examples were:

  • Psalm 63, when King Saul was threatening King David
  • Psalm 51, when King David was feeling godly sorrow after realizing he had sinned against God
  • Although the author is unknown, Psalm 100 is a psalm of giving thanks.

That is why Psalms is a good prayer guide to follow before sleeping.

What is a good prayer to say before bed?

Heavenly Father, I thank You, for You are good. Your love is steadfast, and You are merciful. Thank You, Father, for Your faithfulness sustains me. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

As in the example above, you can use the Psalms for prayer before bed. For example, the prayer above came from Psalm 100:5 where it was written:

“For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.”

Psalm 100:5 "For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations."

If you want to thank God before going to sleep for everything He has done for you during the day, you can pray using that verse.

What is a good prayer for kids to say before bed?

Father God, I thank You for keeping me safe as I went to school and came back home. Thank You also for keeping my family safe. I pray that no evil shall befall us as we go to sleep. You are my refuge and my fortress. I thank You because as I face tomorrow, Your mercies are new every morning. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Above is a prayer guide for kids before they go to bed. The Psalm used here is Psalm 91, verses 2 and 9-10, where it was written:

“I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.”

I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust." Psalm 91:

“Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation; There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.”

Psalm 91:9-10 "Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation; There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling."

There is little difference between the prayers that kids can pray and those of adults. After all, they encounter the same God and learn the same things about God. The only difference is that kids might pray their prayers more simply.

Writing Poems

As mentioned, writing poetry is a good hobby for allowing us to express creatively. That means you can write your poems in a way that represents what you want to say to God. You can write into poetry what you have learned about Who God is and your encounters with His grace and mercy.

In times of sorrow, my God is with me

I’m His child, His loved one, an adopted family

In a season of storms, He is my tranquility

In Christ, I have peace; He is my serenity

The example above is a sample of a written poem. Short poems are okay if you cannot write long ones—there are no rules. Remember that everything should be biblical and that your poems do not have the same authority as the Scriptures. It is also vital to remember that faithfulness to what the Scriptures teach should not be compromised just for the sake of the poem’s creativity. Only in the way we express our thoughts can we use creativity—not when it comes to what the Bible teaches. If you come up with something new when using the Bible, for sure that is not biblical. Theology is not like science, for which there is always something novel or that is a paradigm shift.

Whether you pray the Psalms or use biblical truths to compose your own poems, remember that you are accomplishing this out of your relationship with God. You can try writing poems as you write your journals as part of your daily routine.
