A Prayer Following an Election

As a church community, we pray to God corporately and individually when there is an upcoming election. We pray for God’s will to be done, that good leaders with morals shall take the different offices or be appointed into government positions, that the election shall be conducted honestly and with integrity, that the people shall vote wisely, and many more considerations. However, praying does not end after the election. Even after the election, there are still things that we could pray for our nation as Christians.

Heavenly Father, give us the grace always to remember our nation and its leaders, not just before and during an election but also after it, for You have commanded us to make prayers, intercessions, and supplications for all. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

What Can You Pray After an Election?

You, as an individual or a church community, could pray for many different prayer points after an election. One is praying for the elected leaders. If, before an election, you were praying that the leaders who would be elected would be good ones who will serve the people’s interest, now you are praying for the leaders that were victorious. It does not matter whether the elected leaders are the ones you voted for or not. The Bible commanded us in 1 Timothy 2:1–2 that we are to make supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgiving for all people, including kings and those in high positions. In our context, it would be the president, the senators, congressmen, governors, and every other elected and appointed official in the government.

What can we pray for these officials? You can pray for them to have the opportunity to hear the Gospel and that the Holy Spirit would soften their hearts and open their spiritual eyes so that they may repent and believe the Gospel. If we want godly leaders, they must come to Christ. Also, even if they are not Christians, pray for God’s grace so they may lead with wisdom and uphold good moral values.

Another prayer point that you can pray following an election is that the citizens shall submit to whoever the elected officials are. We should pray this especially for those whose ideal candidate did not win. In Romans 13:1-7, the apostle Paul wrote to the church in Rome to submit to authorities, who were the very government that persecuted them. In 1 Peter 2:13-17, the apostle Peter also writes that we are to submit to every human institution or the government, whether headed by an emperor, governor, etc. In context, the Bible tells us that one way to glorify God, conduct ourselves honorably among the unbelievers, and silence foolish people is by submitting to the authorities.

Of course, there are boundaries to it. We stand up against the authorities if they are already compelling us to sin or to go against God. In those times, the passage in Acts 5:29 applies, and that is that we obey God rather than men.

How Can I Pray Following an Election?

Following an election, you can pray individually or corporately. You pray for two main things—the newly elected leaders and the citizens who just got newly elected leaders. These samples are just two main ideas you can use as you pray following an election. Of course, there are other things that you can pray for. You can take time to think about who or which factors will be affected by the election that just took place. One consideration, for sure, is the citizens who just got a new leader. It could also be the economy, as its rise or fall depends on the administration. It could be the global affairs in which the United States is a big influence or the future of certain groups such as refugees and immigrants. As you think from that perspective, you will find some concerns for which you can pray.

Father in heaven, I pray for our newly elected leaders that they shall indeed follow up on the promises that they have given during their campaigns. I pray that they will lead this nation with integrity and uphold moral values when it comes to the laws and policies they execute. Most of all, I pray they will come to know and follow Jesus. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Father, I pray that the economy will recover more quickly after this election and that the newly elected officials shall lower the inflation rate and continue to make our nation prosperous economically. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

A Prayer Following An Election

As you pray for the newly elected officials following an election, it is essential to remember that as Christians our hope is not ultimately in them but in Christ. No matter what is happening in the political landscape, it does not change the truth that God is sovereign and that He is the One Who ultimately overrides everything and accomplishes His purpose (Psalm 97; Isaiah 46:8-10).
