How To Pray For The Upcoming Election

God commands us to make prayers, intercessions, and supplications for all people. Suppose the nation is about to have its election. In that case, we should pray and intercede for the political candidates, voters, the State Department who regulates elections, other state election agencies, and the United States Electoral College if a president and vice-president are being elected. As the nation is about to elect and re-elect its leaders, remember that whatever happens in the election, and no matter who gets elected, God remains sovereign over the country. Whoever gets elected president, God is not surprised with the result of that candidate becoming president. In Daniel 2:21, Daniel tells us of God’s sovereignty regarding the nations. God changes times and seasons; he sets up kings and removes them. Even if the president or elected officials are not perfect in their leadership, God in His sovereignty can still use them to accomplish His purpose. Nothing can thwart His sovereign decree. In Proverbs 19:21, it is written that many are the plans in a man’s mind, but in the end, it is the purpose of the LORD that shall stand. That should give us peace with whatever the end result of our elections happens to be.

Daniel 2:21

And he changeth the times and the seasons: he removeth kings, and setteth up kings: he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding:

How do I pray for the election?

When you pray for an election, you don’t just pray on a national scale, but on a state and local scale too! In the United States, the regulation and oversight of elections are decentralized. Different election agencies oversee the elections in their state. The United States Electoral College is different, since it is the one that handles the election of the president and the vice-president. Regardless of the state you are from, pray for whatever election agency oversees the election in your state, city, and town. You can also pray for the Electoral College if a president is being elected. You can pray for the election agencies to be diligent in the work they do to ensure that everything is done with due diligence so that the results of the elections are accurate. You don’t want election agencies to end up allowing an unqualified candidate to serve, just because they missed out on something in his or her documents. You can also pray for election agencies to do their work with honesty and integrity, that they shall always uphold fair and just elections. You can also pray for the election itself. Pray that the election will go smoothly and that its integrity is protected to ensure confidence in its results, since there have been proven reports that foreign states have recently interfered with elections. Of course, you can also pray for the candidates to run their campaign honestly, without resulting in any dirty tactics to win.

Proverbs 28:6

Better is the poor that walketh in his uprightness, than he that is perverse in his ways, though he be rich.

Heavenly Father, You are the God who gives grace and keeps evil from Your people. I pray that You will provide grace upon the political candidates to run their campaigns with honesty and without cheating. I also pray for the elections agencies that oversee the election on the local, state, and federal levels to do their work diligently and always uphold a fair and just election. I pray for our election to go smoothly and that its integrity will be protected so that the citizens will be confident in the legitimacy of our election’s results. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

How do I pray for my country?

The election is not just about political candidates, but also about the citizens themselves. It is the citizens who will vote for their leaders. That is why you should pray for the citizens to exercise wisdom and think wisely about choosing who to vote for. You can also pray that the people won’t vote for political candidates who will legislate and implement ungodly laws. For example, politicians that implement regulations that allow abortion should be avoided.

Another thing you can pray for is peace. Most of the time, people have different views and opinions, so they vote for other candidates. Pray for peace to abound during the election and that no division nor hatred shall be present where people fight just because they have different views and opinions. Also, you can pray for the people to submit to the authorities, no matter who the elected officials are, even if they are the candidates they didn’t want. They shouldn’t submit if they are compelled to sin.

Heavenly Father, You are the God who governs all things. I pray for the citizens of my nation as we approach the election that they shall vote wisely and think carefully before giving their vote to someone. I pray that the leaders they elect won’t be leaders who are sure to implement regulations and laws that are evil in Your sight. I pray for peace to abound among the citizens, and that differences in views and opinions won’t cause division, hatred, or violence. I pray for the people of my nation that they shall submit to whomever the elected leaders are and that they shall still strive to become good citizens of our nation. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Though this might be a little off topic, you can include praying for the citizens of your nation to get to know the real king, who is Jesus. Most citizens complain about their leaders and their shortcomings. That is because they expect perfection from a leader who will never meet those expectations. The only person who can meet the expectation of being a perfect leader is Christ, the King of kings and the Lord of lords. You can pray for the Gospel to propagate and that the people will come to know the true leader who liberated them from sin—Christ.

Proverbs 28:6

Better is the poor that walketh in his uprightness, than he that is perverse in his ways, though he be rich.

Revelation 19:16

And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, King Of Kings, And Lord Of Lords.

Holy Spirit, You are the One who leads us into the truth. I pray for all the Christians in my nation that they shall be bold and courageous in preaching the Gospel so that the people may know Christ, who is our true leader. I pray for the people who get to hear the Gospel that You would soften their hearts and open their spiritual eyes so that they may see Christ, who is the perfect leader they need, who liberated them from sin. I pray that they repent and commit to following Him, finding eternal life, and being part of His kingdom. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Should we pray for our governmental leaders?

Even if it is still election season, you can pray for the elected leaders, whoever they may be. Pray that they shall lead the nation with wisdom and excellence. You can pray for God’s grace upon them, since it is God who gives wisdom to men. You can also pray that they shall lead with honesty and integrity, that they shall always put the public’s interest before their own interests. Also, pray that they never implement legislation that is evil in the sight of God.

Most importantly, pray that there will be open doors for those newly elected leaders to get to know Jesus and that they shall repent and commit to following Christ. If we want godly leadership for our nation, we must pray for those leaders to know Christ. You can pray these things for whomever ends up winning the election.

Psalm 33:12

Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord; and the people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance.

Father in heaven, You hear every prayer I pray and you commanded us to pray and intercede for our government and its leaders. I pray for whoever wins the election to lead with wisdom and excellence. Give them the grace that they may have wisdom in their leadership. I also pray that they shall govern our nation with honesty and integrity, always putting the people’s interests above their own. I pray that they shall always choose to do that which is morally right, and never pass nor implement any evil laws in Your sight. Most of all, I pray that they will get to hear the Gospel and that they shall repent and surrender their lives to Christ and strive to have godly leadership over our nation. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Colossians 1:17

And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.

Whenever there is an upcoming election, especially if it involves electing a new president of the United States, people around the world worry about who will win. They worry about what the future may hold as a result. However, as Christians, we must not worry about it, but rather pray to God about it. The peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard our hearts and minds. Also, not everything in this world is affected by whoever the newly elected leaders are. Christ is before all things, and in Him, all things hold together.
