How to Pray when Someone Owes You Money

When someone owes you money, don’t you keep wondering when that person is going to pay you? Sometimes, you may even see that person who owes you buying a lot of stuff while they seem to have forgotten about the money he or she borrowed from you. Sometimes, lending money and borrowing can become an instrument of Satan, to create a doorway for him to enter people’s minds and hearts. Proverbs 22:7 says that the borrower is a slave to the lender. Debt is a form of slavery, and when you participate in this act, you get yourself caught up in slavery even if you are simply lending the money. As you can see, when someone owes you money, it causes you to think about your money and be stressed about when the person is going to pay you back. You both are tied together unhealthily.

As Christians, we should be alert to the enemy’s scheme about this matter. Psalm 37:21 says, The wicked borroweth, and payeth not again: but the righteous sheweth mercy, and giveth. To walk according to Christ’s righteousness, simply walk in mercy and let go of the person who never pays his debts. Instead of overthinking about the money and the person, run to God and pray for that person.

How to pray when someone owes you money? You can pray in this manner:

Heavenly Father, I lift to You (name of the person). As my heart is heavy because of the money he/she borrowed, I surrender them to You, Father. I pray for financial blessing in their life so that they may never borrow again. May You use them instead to be a giver in the Kingdom as I release them from my life in Christ’s mercy. May the money they took from me be a seed of the Father’s love. Encounter them and reveal Yourself to them in Jesus’ name. Amen.

What does God say about owing money?

Romans 13:8 says, Owe no man anything, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law. Owing someone, especially owing them money, is clearly not God’s will. As mentioned earlier, when you borrow money from someone, you become a slave to that person. You enslave yourself, which gives Satan a doorway to working in your life. Remember that the enemy comes to steal, kill, and destroy. Sometimes, friendships are destroyed because of money, people are killed because of money, and people steal money. While money isn’t evil in itself, it can be a tool for the enemy to execute his plan in a person’s life, especially since the world’s greatest value and power are none other than money. Money is a powerful thing, and while it can be a great tool to advance God’s Kingdom, Satan can also use it as a powerful tool to advance the kingdom of darkness through temptations. 1 Timothy 6:10 says, For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

Know that the Heavenly Father is a great provider to all His children. Sometimes, we run to a friend first to give us what we need rather than running to God and trusting in His perfect provision for His children. I believe that borrowing money from others can reveal our lack of faith and trust in God when it comes to finances. Running to borrow money from others is a self-made effort rather than praying to God, asking Him to provide for your need, waiting for His instructions, and, in no time, getting what you need. Sometimes, He can surprise you with a knock on your door and a person is right there bringing you what you need at the moment. God can do things in His own way. If we let Him do His thing, and trust in Him and His perfect timing, we save ourselves from worries and unnecessary stresses. Young children waiting for their parents to come home don’t worry about the electricity bills, water bills, insurance, rentals, etc. They just eat and fulfill their responsibilities, in full trust that their parents will take care of everything for them. That is what Heavenly Father wants from all His children—to trust Him in all things, including finances.

So, when someone owes you money, that can be a good opportunity to share the Gospel with that person. Let the money go, show mercy, and learn your lesson not to be involved in any form of slavery again. While lending can put you at spiritual risk, your best option is to give without expectation, help without asking for something in return, and lend without any intention but to simply give. There’s a great reward for being generous, and it’s a promise from God (see 2 Corinthians 9:6-7).

Does the Bible say to be debt-free?

As in Romans 13:8, where it says we should owe no one anything, God wants us to be debt-free. After all, He first sent His son Jesus Christ to free us all from a debt we could never pay. The price for our sins was too high, so Jesus Christ offered His own life as the penalty for our sins. You see, Jesus Christ came to set us free. It isn’t wise, then, to return to being a slave when He has set you free. In order to walk in Christ’s victory, we must do His will and not do things according to our own ways and understanding.

When you are debt-free – simply a giver and a person full of contentment – life will be easier for you as, in a sense, you will have less stress and fewer worries about financial matters. People’s greatest worry, aside from health, is money. Money is a necessity to survive in this world; to be able to eat and live in comfort and convenience. However, when ambitions and greed come in, people can easily be deceived and fall into various vices involving money until their debts are no longer payable. It is important to always partner with God in all things because He is the source of wisdom, especially in handling money wisely.

Are you allowed to pray for money?

It isn’t wrong to pray to God and ask Him about money. God knows people need money, and He knows that money can do many great things. As mentioned earlier, money is not evil, but it is the love of money that leads to idolatry, which is a sin against God. When money becomes your idol, God’s voice diminishes in your life until the world’s system is eating up your soul. It is not healthy to think about money at all times. When you worry about money, think about money, pray about money, and talk about money as if money were everything in this world, that, my friend, is a spiritual red flag. It is time to assess your spiritual state, repent, and continue trusting in the One Who owns so much more than money. You are a child of God—a child of the King of kings and Lord of lords. What is money but dust in His eyes? He can give you more than what money can offer in this world—peace of mind and heart, eternal life, life in abundance through Christ’s presence in your life, unexplainable joy, kindness, good people, and so much more.

Somehow these are some of the things that a constant borrower of money misses out on. When they resort to borrowing money from someone else, they miss out on realizing how much Heavenly Father loves them and provides for their needs. At the same time, as the lender of money, you get wisdom in all things. Show mercy, be kind, and be discerning. Don’t hesitate to help a person in need, and trust that whatever you give, you can let God reward you instead. Give without strings attached.

Continuously pray for people who owe you money. Pray that they will encounter Who God is and realize their true riches in Christ Jesus. Declare deliverance to their soul and declare the reign of Christ in their life.

May the Lord bless your heart and give you wisdom and peace at all times. Christ alone is enough. He is more than enough.
