A Prayer About Giving

There are times when we can be generous right at the moment; for example, giving your extra slice of pie to a friend. However, there are also scenarios where we cannot just give right off the bat. It is not because we are stingy, but simply because it is something that we have to decide with wisdom and pray to God about. These are circumstances where the amount we’re thinking about giving is substantial. For example, let’s say a friend is about to have a wedding, and you want to donate a large amount of money to help him instead of just a small amount. In that context, you would want to pray to God first before making that commitment.

Heavenly Father, as You have entrusted me with the resources I have, help me be good stewards of them. Give me the wisdom to manage them wisely, even when giving generously. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

What Do You Pray When You Want to Give?

One of the things that you have to pray whenever you desire to give to a person is God’s wisdom and counsel. But why do you do that? First, the resources that you have do not primarily belong to you. They are entrusted to you by God. Everything comes from God alone, and everything on this earth belongs to God (Romans 11:36)(Psalm 24:1). That includes money, property, and every resource you have. Though you may have gotten those resources through your skill, talent, and hard work, even those things came from God.

(For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen. Romans 11:36)

So, we must be faithful to whatever God has entrusted to us and be good stewards of it (Matthew 25:14-30)(1 Corinthians 4:2). As we desire to manage faithfully the resources that God has entrusted to us, we will desire to manage them with wisdom. That is why, if we desire to give to someone and the amount of the resources that are needed is considerable, it is essential not to give just because someone expects it of us, but to first come to the LORD and ask Him for the wisdom that we need as we decide on the matter. In James 1:5, it is written that if we need wisdom, we are to ask God. And if we ask, we are to ask in faith.

( Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful. 1 Corinthians 4:2) (If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. James 1:5)

Another prayer you can pray is asking God for the resources you need. Sometimes, you desire to give to someone but just don’t have enough. You cannot compromise on other expenses as they are vital; this is the application of wisdom. Going back to the example of a friend who is about to have a wedding and to whom you want to bless a certain amount, let’s say you don’t have enough money to be able to give the amount you desire. In that case, you can pray and ask God for the money so that you may bless your friend.

That desire might have come from the Holy Spirit, as the enemy wouldn’t encourage you to be generous. As you ask God for the resources to be a blessing to someone, remember it is written in 2 Corinthians 9:8 that God makes grace abound to us so that we may abound in good works.

(And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work: 2 Corinthians 9:8)

How Do You Pray About Giving?

You pray about giving by asking God for wisdom. When you desire to give, what is the specific matter for which you need wisdom? You can be even more specific in asking God for wisdom. You can ask God for wisdom as to what amount or how much of your resources is best to give. You can also ask God for wisdom regarding the right time to give. Whatever you have difficulty deciding when it comes to giving, you can ask God for His wisdom concerning it. It is also important to note that when we come to God in prayer, we pray in humility. We come to God in His throne of grace to ask Him for the grace and mercy we need (Hebrews 4:16). Remember that everything comes from God—the resources that you have and even the wisdom that you need to give wisely.

(Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need. Hebrews 4:16)

Heavenly Father, I desire to bless my friend, who is about to get married, with a certain amount of money to help him in his wedding preparations. I pray for wisdom as I decide what amount I should give while also considering my budget. Therefore, I pray that You would bless me so I may bless him more. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

As you give, remember to do it out of love. In 1 Corinthians 16:14, the apostle Paul writes to the church in Corinth that even if we do great things for others but we have no love, it is all for nothing. Our motivation to do things out of love for people is the very love God has displayed for us in the person and work of Jesus Christ.
