A Medical Student’s Prayer

In everything, we ought to depend on God. We depend on God for protection as we safely travel to work. As we do ministry, we depend on God for grace. When it comes to our journey in our Christian walk, we also depend on God to sustain and strengthen us every step of the way. If we rely on God in every facet of our lives, medical students should depend on God regarding their studies and pursuit of becoming a medical doctor.

Heavenly Father, remind me that in times of weakness, I am made strong, for Your grace is sufficient, and Your power is perfect in my weaknesses. May I always pursue medicine not by my might but by Your Spirit. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Why Pray for Your Studies and Future?

As a medical student, you pray for your studies and career pursuit because everything you need to become a medical doctor or be excellent in your studies all comes from God. When we say “everything,” we mean that. Keep in mind that you were admitted to the university of your choice not because of your talent and intelligence but because God orchestrated everything for you. Even if you could gain admittance because of your abilities and become an excellent student who is very knowledgeable, your gifts came from God alone.

In (Romans 11:36 For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen.), it is written that from God, through God, and to God are all things. God is the source, He is the means, and He is the end goal. The Scripture teaches us that everything comes from God. Even those well-known medical doctors who are not Christians can achieve what they were able to achieve not because of their capabilities but because God allowed them to do so with His common grace. That is why in Daniel 2:17-18, when King Nebuchadnezzar has been executing all the wise men for being unable to interpret his dream, Daniel told his friends to seek God and His mercy to interpret the king’s dream. It is because all knowledge, wisdom, and understanding come from God.

That is why you pray for your studies and your future as a medical doctor. You are ultimately dependent on God in everything you need as a medical student and a doctor in the future. There is never a time when we do not need God’s grace.

What Do You Pray as A Medical Student?

As a medical student, surely you pray for the things that concern you. One concern, for sure, is your student workload, which may include studying, research, internship, laboratory work, etc. You might be worried about the approaching deadline, the challenges that cause you hindrances, like having a hard time understanding what you are studying, the requirements you must satisfy, and many other things.

Hence, you should pray to God and depend on Him for the grace and mercy you need for your studies. In (Hebrews 4:16  Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.), it is written that in Christ, we have the confidence to approach God’s throne of grace and ask Him for the grace and mercy we need. With that in mind, do not hesitate to ask God for the grace, wisdom, knowledge, and understanding you need as you study. You can also ask that He lend you His strength as you persevere in the challenges you encounter.

How Do You Pray as a Medical Student?

As a medical student, you pray to God by presenting Him your prayer requests regarding your life as a medical student. In the previous section, we talked specifically about praying for your studies. However, do not feel limited. As a medical student, you can also pray for other aspects of your life. If, for example, the tuition fee is your problem, you can ask God for financial provision. If you are still choosing which hospital to practice in when you become a doctor someday, you can pray and ask God for wisdom as you choose. The principle is simple: Whatever concerns you have as a medical student, pray and lift those cares to God (Philippians 4:6-7 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.); (1 Peter 5:6-7  Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.).

Philippians 4:6-7 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

A Medical Student’s Prayer

Heavenly Father, I am currently having challenges understanding a specific topic for my upcoming exam. Give me the understanding and knowledge so that I may remember these concepts. I pray that the professors in my class shall properly teach us well, clearly, and understandably. Help me finish all my requirements to start my internship in my last year in medicine. There have been times when I wanted to give up, but You alone are my strength. You are my rock and fortress. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Praying as a medical student involves not only praying for your technical concerns in your studies. You can also be emotionally and mentally vulnerable to God about how you feel. Just like David, you can pour your heart out to God in times of hardships, knowing that God listens to you and is merciful (Psalm 145:8-9; Psalm 116:1-2).
