How to Pray to God for a Girlfriend

At some point in our lives, when the season is right, we desire to get into a relationship with someone and eventually marry. Men will want to find a godly woman, pursue her heart, and continue as boyfriend and girlfriend. Obviously, as a godly man, making the woman his girlfriend is not the end goal. Dating is just a stepping stone to what is and ought to be a man’s intention, which is marriage. However, it is imperative to note that it is not even about making a woman his, though that is part of it. It is all about making the woman see and feel that she is God’s daughter by how he pursues, treats, loves, and serves her.

Heavenly Father, as I pray and seek You for a girlfriend whom I intend to make my wife, give me the grace to be the best husband I can be for her—one who is worthy to take care of Your daughter. Give me the grace to lead, protect, provide, and serve like Christ. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Should We Pray to God for a Girlfriend?

First, we must discern whether we are already in the right season to get into a relationship (Ecclesiastes 3:1-8). Once we determine we are already in the right season to enter a relationship with a woman, we can start desiring and taking action in the pursuit of a woman. However, at that point, it is essential that we both pray to God for a girlfriend and also do our part in searching for one and pursuing whomever that woman may be. While God’s providence is at work in every detail of our lives, that does not mean we are to be passive, expecting a God-given girlfriend to appear out of nowhere. At the same time, as you seek a godly relationship with the opposite sex, you cannot do that on your own and depend on your strength and wisdom. You must rely on God’s guidance, wisdom, and help.

A good example of this one is from Genesis 24:12-14. The passage’s context is that Abraham asked his servant to find a wife for his son Isaac, one who is not a Canaanite woman. And so, the servant went to Abraham’s country, where his kindred resided, and stopped by the well. There, the servant prayed to God. He intended to ask the women there for a drink of water, and he asked that God let whomever allowed him a drink and also offered to water his camels be Isaac’s wife. It is important to note that the passage does not imply that we should ask for specific signs from God as we choose whom to pursue as men. That is not the main point. What the passage tells us, which we can apply in our lives as men who desire to pursue a woman, is that we ought to pray to God and ask for His guidance and wisdom.

The servant was the one who went and looked for a wife for Isaac due to their cultural context. But we can glean more from the passage. Just like the servant, we are to go and find someone who would make a good spouse and pursue the woman’s heart. At the same time, we should also ask God for guidance and wisdom as we choose whom we will pursue, date, and eventually marry.

That is why the Bible tells us to seek and ask God for wisdom, who is generous to give wisdom to those who need it (James 1:5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.). We are to also ask God for guidance and the grace to discern which is the wise choice (Proverbs 14:8 The wisdom of the prudent is to understand his way: but the folly of fools is deceit.). As we decide whether to pursue a woman or not, we decide with our own choice guided by the Scriptures, which are living and active (Hebrews 4:12). If we want to know God’s will, we only need to read His Word. His Word tells us to be not yoked with unbelievers (2 Corinthians 6:14), shows us how a godly and dignified woman would make an excellent wife (Proverbs 31:10-31), instructs us to pursue character more than physical appearance (1 Samuel 16:7; 1 Peter 3:3-4), and offers much more guidance. Based on God’s revelations through His Word, we can discern whether to pursue a woman or not or determine if it is the right season to date.

Heavenly Father, I pray that You would give me the grace to be driven by the spirit, not by the flesh, as I look for a potential mate. May I value a woman’s character, spirit, and values more than her physical appearance. I pray I will be more attracted to her kindness, gentleness, and godliness. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

How Can I Pray to God for a Girlfriend?

As we desire to pursue a woman, have a girlfriend, and eventually marry, we must ask God for it. James 4:2 says that sometimes, we do not have because we do not ask. Even in Matthew 7:7, the scriptures teach us to ask, seek, and knock on the door for what we desire. Remember that God is our heavenly Father who only wants to give good gifts to His children (Matthew 7:11 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?). That truth should encourage us to go before God’s throne of grace, be honest with Him, and pray to Him about finding a woman, getting into a relationship, and marrying.

Matthew 7:11 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?

Of course, as we pray to God for a girlfriend, aside from praying that He will give us one, we should also ask God for help as we seek one. As mentioned before, we both ask God for guidance, help, and wisdom while taking action. As you look for a potential mate or consider whether to approach a specific woman, pray and ask the Holy Spirit to give you the wisdom you need and the grace to exercise discernment in line with God’s Word. It is imperative you also have your mind renewed by constantly meditating on the Scriptures, a habit we all ought to cultivate whether we desire to date or not.

Below is a sample prayer:

Father in heaven, I want to start my own family sometime soon. I pray that I will be able to find a godly, dignified, and gentle woman who fears You, values integrity, and is trustworthy—a woman whose adornment is her character and strength and not her outward beauty. Guide me as I look for the woman I can pursue and date as my girlfriend. I pray that I will be able to find her as I serve You in the ministry. Guide my steps, Father, and give me the grace always to exercise godly wisdom. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Praying and asking God for a girlfriend as you desire to get into a relationship and marry could vary from one person to another, just as no two love stories are the same. However, one fundamental principle you can keep in mind is that you desire to glorify and honor God in your pursuit of a relationship. This will guide you in your path, in the choices you make, and in the desires you have. That is why we are first to delight ourselves in the LORD (Psalm 37:4 Delight thyself also in the Lord: and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.).
