How To Pray When In Pain

A person typically encounters two types of pain. One of them is physical, as our bodies feel pain when we are injured, wounded, or intensely unwell. However, there is another kind of pain, one that some people claim as being worse than physical wounds. This second type is emotional pain. There are many different reasons why a person may feel emotional pain. It could be from a rejection, from a betrayal, the hurtful words someone has said, unjustified harshness, and so many more. Regardless, it doesn’t change the reality that emotional pain, whatever the cause may be, is painful. Some studies say that the brain reacts to physical wounds in the same way as when we experience emotional wounds.

Heavenly Father, I pray for healing for my emotional wounds. Thank You because no matter how deep these emotional wounds may be, no wound is too deep to reach with Your grace and mercy. Your mercy soothes my aching heart. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

What Does The Bible Say When We Are In Emotional Pain?

The focus of this article when we say “pain” is emotional pain. Emotional pain is a reality of life, but the Bible also tells us truths about emotional pain. The truth is that the pain we experience here on earth is nothing compared to the future glory that awaits us (Romans 8:18 For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.). Hence, we must fix our eyes on unseen things eternal things, and not focus on our current painful experiences. The eternity that we will spend with God is nothing compared to what we are experiencing now (2 Corinthians 4:17-18).

Not only is our pain momentary and light compared to eternity, but our pain also has meaning. Romans 8:28 states that all things work together for the good of those who love God. We can be confident that all things work for our benefit, no matter the good or bad circumstances. For example, if someone betrays us, we grow in maturity and Christlikeness. However, if we are not in Christ, everything, even the good things, will not work for our good.

Another good example is Joseph (Gen 50:20 But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive.). He went through many painful experiences—being sold by his brothers to slavery, being falsely accused of doing wrong when he chose not to sleep with Potiphar’s wife, being thrown into prison, and being forgotten by the cupbearer whose dreams he interpreted. Yet, we know that everything worked together for good within God’s master plan. Therefore, rejoice, for even in suffering, there is meaning. When we suffer without meaning, that is futile suffering, through which persevering is meaningless. However, that is not the case for believers.

But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive

Father in heaven, when we feel hurt, help us remember what the Bible says about tough times. Remind us that the pain we go through here is nothing compared to the amazing future you have waiting for us. Remind us to focus on things we can’t see but are everlasting, not just what’s happening now. Help us seek the things above where Christ is seated. Even if they seem big, our struggles are small compared to the good things you have planned for us. Like Joseph in the Bible, who faced many hard times but saw how everything worked out for good, help us trust that our tough times have meaning too. In Jesus’ name, we ask for strength. Amen.

How To Pray When We Are In Emotional Pain?

Whenever we’re in emotional pain, there is one thing that we always need: comfort. Thankfully, the Bible is clear that God is our comforter in times of pain. In (Psalm 34:18 The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.), it is written that the LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit. That is one of the reasons why we can trust God even in times of pain because we know that He is there. He never leaves us. Every step of the way, we are assured that He is near. Also, He rescues us whenever we feel that our spirit is crushed by the pain. Therefore, whenever we are in emotional pain, we can turn to the scriptures to pray and ask God for comfort in line with those verses.

The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.)

Heavenly Father, in my moments of emotional pain, I find comfort in Your presence. I am assured that You stay near the brokenhearted, saving those with crushed spirits. I trust that You will never leave me; Your constant presence is my refuge. Even when my spirit feels crushed, I know that You will rescue me. Thank You for being my comforter. May Your peace envelop my heart and mind. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

(Psalm 147:3  He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.) is also an excellent passage to pray over. It tells us that God heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. Indeed, when we are in emotional pain, we can feel our hearts bleeding due to the emotional wounds that have been inflicted upon us. Some of us may even feel that an emotional wound is harder to heal than physical ones. However, no wound is outside the healing power of God. He can make us whole as He binds up all our wounds, both physical and emotional.

In the midst of emotional turmoil, we can find solace in 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 (ESV): “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we are comforted by God.” These verses resonate with the assurance that our heavenly Father, full of mercy and compassion, intimately understands our pain and offers us divine comfort.
