A Christian Prayer Against Depression

Depression is a mental state affecting a human’s perception, emotions, and physical health. As Christians, we are not exempted from this kind of attack from the enemy, especially when we spend less time with God’s Word and more time focused on the real world and everything that entails. The Bible says that a mind governed by the flesh or carnal things leads to death, but a mind governed by the Spirit leads to life (see Romans 8:6).

As you search for a prayer against depression, God will surely deliver you and empower you to walk with Him in your faith. Or, if your prayer is for someone else, know that He hears your prayers. Your intercessions for someone going through depression are like incense rising before His throne. Praying against depression is a part of walking according to your new nature in Christ and the authority of Christ inside you. You can pray in this manner:

In Jesus’ name, I command every thought that makes me depressed be captive to the obedience of Christ!

I will pull down every stronghold and lie of the enemy. Be gone, in Jesus’ name!

In Jesus’ name, I command every thought that makes me depressed be captive to the obedience of Christ!

Depression along with fear and anxiety, do not come from God. Jesus said that the enemy steals, kills, and destroys (see John 10:10).

Depression can sometimes hit when situations are poor or not in your favor; when you have recurring failures and regrets in life, it can make you feel hopeless, mentally and emotionally drained, and pessimistic in your outlook for the future. You are not alone in this battle. However, you can enjoy the victory of Christ the moment you change your way of thinking by running to the promises of God and declaring them. For instance, Jeremiah 29:11 says that God’s plans for you are good and will not harm you. He wants you to have a promising future and hope through Him. You can declare this Scripture in this manner:

In Jesus’ name, God’s plans for me are wonderful and good! He does not intend to harm me in any way, and I have a future and a hope in Him through Christ! Negative thoughts, leave right now!

In Jesus’ name, I command every thought that makes me depressed be captive to the obedience of Christ!

By making such a declaration of God’s Word, you remind the devil of his defeat. Christ Jesus already defeated him on the cross, and God’s true plans are for a bright future and wonderful hope in Christ Jesus.

In the Bible, the prophet Elijah became depressed after encountering a fierce false prophet named Jezebel who threatened to kill him. He ran for his life and hid from Ahab and Jezebel, but God was gracious to Elijah. He made him take a nap, fed him with food, and thus strengthened him (see 1 Kings 19).

Sometimes, you need to take a break from all the turmoil of life, get some rest, and treat yourself to a delicious meal; then, you can again stand up and face life. Like Elijah, you have unlimited hopes and dreams in Christ Jesus, and nothing is too hard for the LORD to achieve!

What Bible verse is good for depression

There are many Scriptures in the Bible that can help to renew our minds and thoughts. The more time we spend reading and meditating on the Word of God, the less the enemy can fill our empty space with his lies, depressing thoughts, and all the imagined troubles that promote worries, fears, anxieties, and doubts. When the Word of God fills our mind, the more we can hear the voice of the Father clearly, and we are better able to discern good and evil.

Here are some Bible verses that may help in your battle against depression:

  1. Philippians 4:8

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

  1. 2 Corinthians 10:5

Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

In Jesus’ name, I command every thought that makes me depressed be captive to the obedience of Christ!

As Christians, we must spend more time with God, with His Word, along with our brothers and sisters in Christ, who encourage us in our journey of faith.

In Jesus’ name, I command every thought that makes me depressed be captive to the obedience of Christ!

Can God help with depression?

God helps us with everything in this life, including depression. Our Heavenly Father knows that we are prone to spiritual attacks. We are in an ongoing spiritual war, and it is important that we are equipped for the days of evil when they come and to live a surrendered life to the Lord Jesus Christ. That is why we have the Church, our spiritual family, through whom God chose to manifest Himself. We also have our leaders and pastors who exhort us using the Word of God and our godly brothers and sisters in Christ who are there to encourage, uplift, give wisdom, offer prophetic words of knowledge that bring joy to every area of our lives.

Depression isolates you because that is the enemy’s goal – to make you feel alone so he can whisper those lies, fears, and unreal imaginations that cause hopelessness and despair. However, the moment you expose that into the light by coming into fellowship with your brothers and sisters in Christ, the thief’s work will be exposed. Proverbs 6:31 says that when the thief is caught, he will return seven times more than whatever he has stolen from you. This means that once depression leaves, God empowers you, strengthens you, and uses you far more than before.

God can cause everything to work together for good purposes. Even if you have fallen into depression, God can use every trial, pain, and mess in your life as a wonderful testimony of His goodness, power, hope, freedom, and deliverance through Christ Jesus.

Can prayer help depression?

Prayers alone won’t help against depression, but God listens, and He hears you. It is the One you are praying to who truly helps and delivers people from their depression. When you pray the Scriptures, you declare God’s will, and we know that God is always faithful in fulfilling His word.

Whenever the enemy attacks you with depressing thoughts and feelings, run to the Father and communicate with Him; open your Bible and start declaring the promises of God for your life. It will make the devil flee and tremble at His Word.

You can also begin to worship God. Worship changes the atmosphere because when you worship God, a heavenly host gathers to listen and attracts the presence of God.

Know that you are victorious in Christ Jesus. Depression has no place in your life because you are a child of God! You have the mind of Christ, and your mind should be filled with heavenly things, in the name of Jesus.
