A Parents Back To School Prayer

As parents whose kids are about to return to school after the break, the prayer you say is like welcoming the new year. At the beginning of the year, you pray for everything that is about to come. The same concept applies as your children go back to school. You pray for the new term or school year that is about to start. While you pray primarily for your children who are about to return to their studies, you may also pray for the school and teachers who are impacting your children’s education and their development as individuals.

Heavenly Father, I pray this shall be another good school year for my child, another year of growth and learning. I pray that the teachers will teach my child excellently and continue to grow as educators just as my child grows in learning. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

What Can You Pray as Your Child Goes Back to School?

First, you can say prayers that concern the well-being of your child. Everything you pray revolves around the educational well-being of your child. You can ask God for many things as your child returns to school. To start, you can thank God for your child’s refreshing vacation or break. The Bible says in Ephesians 5:20 that we are always to thank God. Everything in our lives is just the product of God’s sustaining grace and mercy upon us. That includes the refreshing break your child had, which they could maximize and enjoy. On your child’s behalf, it is only fitting that you express gratitude.

Father in heaven, I thank You for giving my child the rest he needs after a year of studying in the previous academic year. Thank You for refreshing him and giving him time to enjoy his vacation and allowing him to do many activities with his cousins and friends. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

After expressing gratitude, you may shift your focus and ask God to help your child be faithful in their studies. Your child is returning to school, so it is going to be another year of learning, studying, and doing extracurricular activities. With that, pray for the grace and strength your child needs to be faithful in their studies, be excellent in them, and desire to learn and grow. You pray for grace because it is only by the grace and strength your child gets from God that they will be able to love learning and wisdom and be diligent in their current season. It is only by the strength that we have in Christ that we can be faithful in what God has called us to do (Philippians 4:13)

Heavenly Father, I pray for the strength and grace he needs to be dedicated to his studies continually and always desire to learn and understand what he is studying. Help him always to be diligent and never give unto idleness or procrastination. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

It is not only your child who has an impact on their educational growth. Their school, the teachers, and even their classmates can also have an effect. Therefore, you can say a prayer as school starts and ask that the teachers will always strive to be excellent in teaching. Pray that they won’t just teach for the sake of teaching but that they will be passionate about their subject, wanting their students to indeed understand and grow in knowledge. You can also pray that the teachers will not enforce their ideologies on the students, especially sinful ideologies in the eyes of God. Don’t hesitate to pray for the classmates and friends of your child in school. Ask that they shall be children who would help your child and not ones who would give them evil influence. Pray that your child will have good, supportive, and nurturing relationships with their teachers and classmates and that they can experience a great learning environment. No matter what your concerns, raise them all to God (Philippians 4:6-7; 1 Peter 5:6-7).

Heavenly Father, as our child returns to school, we pray for the teachers to be passionate about imparting knowledge and not use their platform to promote harmful ideologies to my child and his classmates. Surround my child with helpful classmates who will support him in his learning journey. May relationships with teachers and classmates be marked by respect and understanding, fostering a positive learning environment. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Lastly (and perhaps the most important item to include) is to pray for the spiritual well-being of your child as they go back to school. This means praying that just as they grow in the knowledge of science, math, history, and other subjects being taught, they shall also grow in the knowledge of God and spiritual maturity. Also, pray that your child shall understand and always remember that they are studying ultimately for the glory of God and that their main purpose is to display God’s glory in the classroom (1 Corinthians 10:31; Matthew 5:16).

Father in heaven, I pray that in this coming new school year, my child shall not only grow in education but also as Your son, growing in the knowledge of who You are. Let him grow in godly wisdom and in spiritual maturity, where he will continue to grow as he loves You with all of his being. Remind him that his ultimate purpose is to study not for good grades but for Your glory and that he will reflect who You are toward his classmates and teachers. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

As your child returns to school, your prayers encompass their well-being, academic diligence, and spiritual growth. Begin with gratitude for the restful break, thanking God for sustaining grace. Pray for your child’s faithfulness in studies, seeking strength and grace for a year of learning and growth. Extend your prayers to the broader educational environment—teachers passionate about imparting knowledge, classmates fostering positive influences, and a nurturing learning environment. Above all, pray for your child’s spiritual journey so that they may grow academically and in the knowledge of God and have a purposeful life for His glory.
