A Police Officer’s Prayer

Several occupations are dangerous from time to time, where going home to their families is not always guaranteed. One of these is the work of a police officer. Police officers don’t just investigate crimes, secure places, and stop vehicles for speeding. There are situations where they come face to face with an outlaw who has malicious intent. We are talking about cars being stopped without the police officer knowing that the driver has a gun waiting to fire upon them. There are also instances where police officers respond to active shooting incidents. Those are just some of the many cases in which police officers put their lives at risk in the line of duty to preserve and protect law and order in society. Romans 13:3-4 tells us the government is God’s servant, a sword that is there to bring punishment on that which is evil.

Heavenly Father, I thank You because just as our police officers keep us safe and protect us from people with malicious intent, You are the One who protects them. Give them peace, only found in Christ, and strengthen them. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

What Can You Pray As A Police Officer?

If you are a police officer, especially if you are always at risk, given the nature of your work, praying for safety and protection is vital. You can pray for your safety as you carry out your duties and for the safety and protection of fellow officers who are also risking their lives. You can also pray for the grace to be mentally alert, aware of your surroundings, have the presence of mind, and apply your training when encountering dangerous situations.

Another practical prayer is regarding one’s salvation. In (Romans 3:23  For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;), it is written that all of us have sinned and have fallen short of the glory of God. Because we have sinned, we are recipients of God’s wrath and are doomed to eternal death. However, because God is gracious and merciful, He sent His Son Jesus to die for our sins. Jesus lived the life we should have lived and died the death we should have died because of our sins. After three days, He rose from the grave, proving that He is the Son of God and had conquered death for us. Now, He offers forgiveness and eternal life to anyone who believes in Him and repents (Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.; Ephesians 2:1-9; John 11:25  Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:). The kind of life which even death can never separate us from God (Romans 8:35-39).

With that, if you haven’t believed and repented yet, the most important thing you can do as a police officer is accept the Gospel and repent from your sin. If you are already a Christian, then the most urgent prayer you can pray is for your fellow police officers to also understand the Gospel, believe it, and repent. Of course, you should also preach the Gospel to them, and you can also ask God for the grace to be bold.

How to Pray as a Police Officer

In Philippians 4:6-7, it is written that we are to present our requests to God. As we raise our requests to God, the Bible says that His peace – which transcends all understanding – shall guard our hearts and minds. It is one of the best scriptures a police officer could ponder as he prays. You can take the dangers you face each day and any other concerns you have and present them all to God in prayers.

Also, in 1 Peter 5:6-7, it is written that we are to humble ourselves and cast our burdens to God. We must have a posture of humility before God. Ultimately, what keeps us safe is not our buddy, our training, our awareness, or anything other than God. Regarding our other concerns, it is still, through God’s grace and mercy, that they will be addressed. That is why, as we ask ourselves what our concerns are as police officers, we lift them up to God from a posture of humility.

Father in heaven, as I go to work today to patrol our city with my buddy, I pray that You will protect us from any harm and danger and that we will return to our families safely. Give us the grace to always be alert and have the presence of mind whenever we encounter people with malicious intent. I also pray for my partner that he will believe the Gospel and repent as I continually disciple and preach the Gospel to him. I also pray that You will provide for my and my family’s needs, especially our monthly expenses and payables. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Whatever happens in your line of duty as a police officer, one truth that you can rest assured always is that God is sovereign. No matter what happens, the LORD reigns (Psalms 97). Nothing is outside of God’s sovereignty, and we can trust that everything works together for the good of those who love Him (Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.). God can be trusted no matter what.
