A Goodnight Prayer To The One I Love

We always pray for the people we love. For instance, we pray for our family and friends who are dear to us. Since we pray for them, we can also pray for the one we love romantically. We pray for them because we want to seek the good of their well-being (1 Corinthians 10:24 Let no man seek his own, but every man another’s wealth.). There is no better person to seek their well-being from apart from God, whom we can ultimately depend on for anything.

Father in heaven, I pray for the well-being of the person I love that they are doing well physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. My confidence is that You are the One who ultimately watches over them. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Why Pray a Goodnight Prayer for the One You Love?

We pray a goodnight prayer for the one we love simply because we love them. In 1 Corinthians 13:4-7, the Greek word used for the word “love” is “agape,” which means a sacrificial kind of love. It means serving others, putting their interests above ours, and dying ourselves for them. The greatest example of agape love is when Jesus died for our sins on the cross for our eternal well-being so that in Him, we may find eternal life and forgiveness and be adopted into God’s family.

We put the agape love we have for our chosen person into action in many ways. We may act by serving them, showing appreciation through gestures, complimenting them, always being there for them in times of need, being someone they can feel safe and secure with, and many other ways. We also put our agape love into action by constantly praying for them.

But why is prayer one of the ways we put our love into action? Aside from it being a command of God (1 Timothy 2:1 I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;

Ephesians 6:18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;), we pray for the one we love because, in the end, it is God who can ultimately bring about their well-being that we seek. God is the source of all things, the means of all things, and the end goal of all things (Romans 11:36  For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen.). He is the One whom we ultimately depend on, and therefore, we humble ourselves by casting our cares and concerns regarding the person we love to God, who cares for us (1 Peter 5:6-7).

 

Also, whenever we forward the prayer, we pray to God to the person we love or let them know that we just prayed for them. It is something that they would appreciate. It means that we constantly remember them in our prayers and always take time to pray for them and even with them if they ever share with us some concerns or prayer points that they would like us to pray with them.

How Do I Pray a Goodnight Prayer for the One I Love?

A goodnight prayer for the person you love starts with you seeking their well-being from God. It is up to you to specify what that “well-being” is. You could pray for their spiritual well-being and that they will grow more in spiritual maturity, see more of the glories of God, be fruitful in their ministry, etc. You could also seek their emotional well-being by praying that God will comfort them if they are going through difficulties. Pray for them to always be secure in Christ no matter what hurts and pains they may encounter.

As you pray for their well-being, do not limit yourself only to what you think they might need. Pay attention to the challenges they are facing, and listen closely when they talk about their frustrations or worries. Afterward, you will be able to include many helpful requests in your prayers.

As you pray for the one you love, depending on your relationship, you may message them or tell them the prayer you said for them. You could also simply say you just prayed for them. Any way of letting them know that they are in your prayers will be good. Knowing that you remember them when you speak to God would bless them.

Also, since this is a goodnight prayer, don’t forget to include your concerns regarding the night. For example, pray that their family will be safe from any malicious intent during the night, that they will be able to rest well, etc.

Heavenly Father, I pray for [name of the person] that You always give them the grace and strength they need as they face life every day. Give them the grace always to run the race faithfully. Open their eyes more to Your glory that they may behold You. I pray that Christ shall always be their greatest treasure. Protect them from sickness, Father, and keep them safe tonight as they sleep. Refresh them in their rest. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Is praying for the one whom we love every night possible? Absolutely yes. If the Bible commands us to pray without ceasing to God, indeed we can also pray for the one we love (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.). It is not something we find tedious to do but something we delight in doing because we love that person.
