How to Pray for a Sick person

Sickness is not a part of God’s kingdom. When we pray the LORD’s prayer and say, “Your Kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven,” it means that healing, salvation, restoration, freedom, and deliverance also take place on earth, because that’s what heaven is all about. Sickness, oppression, depression, and other things like that are of the devil and driven by the kingdom of darkness.

This is how to pray for a sick person:

In the mighty name of Jesus, I declare healing upon this body and rebuke sickness to leave!

We do not beg God to heal us or embrace sickness as His will when we pray. Sicknesses and illnesses must be rebuked and cast out in one’s life; they belong to the devil, who kills, steals, and destroys (see John 10:10). Jesus Christ came to give us abundant life and to destroy the works of the devil.

How do you pray for healing for someone else?

If you are looking for ways to pray for a sick person, you must first accept the truth that your prayers are powerful and effective because of Christ’s righteousness in you. James 5:16 says that the prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.  You have been made righteous by the blood of Jesus Christ, so God hears and answers your prayers. The Bible teaches us many ways to pray for a sick person. Here are some of the best ways to pray for healing:

  1. By praying over and anointing with oil (James 5:14)

If you are coming over to the house of a friend, loved one or family member who is sick, the Bible says that a prayer offered in faith will restore them to health. Simply come to God believing in His promise of healing. Speak life to a sick person’s body and believe that God is healing that person. You do not need to beg the Father to heal the sick; it is His will for healing to take place.

For instance, you can simply say:

Heavenly Father, thank You for healing my friend. I speak life upon his/her body and command the sickness to leave, in the mighty name of Jesus. Amen.

Heavenly Father, thank You for healing my friend. I speak life upon his/her body and command the sickness to leave, in the mighty name of Jesus. Amen.

If you have anointing oil with you, you can use that to anoint the body of the sick person. Then believe in your heart that God’s healing has taken place.

  1. By rebuking the sickness in the name of Jesus (Matthew 10:8, Luke 4:38-39)

Whether you are interceding or physically in contact with the sick person, you can simply rebuke the sickness in prayer, through the authority of Jesus Christ within you. In Luke 4:38-39, Jesus rebuked the high fever from Peter’s mother-in-law, and she instantly got up and was healed. Simply say to the sickness, I rebuke you sickness! Leave the body, in the name of Jesus!” If you do not doubt and believe that sicknesses bow to the name of Jesus, you can expect healing to take place. Don’t ever underestimate your prayers. It works because Christ is in you!

  1. Have the sick person confess any sins so that healing and forgiveness can take place (James 5:16).

There is healing when one confesses their sins. Sicknesses never come from God. They are the devil’s work, and when a person sins, the enemy can come in to steal, kill, or destroy a person’s life (John 10:10). If healing does not take place, no matter how much people pray, it is sometimes best to ask the sick person if he or she would like to confess anything, such as hidden sins that may be holding back the healing process.

  1. By prayer and fasting

Sometimes, when healing doesn’t occur, or if the works of the enemy in a person’s life cannot be cast out, it can only be done by prayer and fasting. There was an instance in the Gospel where a boy was mute and tormented by an evil spirit, and the disciples of Jesus Christ could not cast out the demon (the source of illness, sicknesses, and all other infirmities). When they reported it to the LORD, Jesus said it could only be cast out by prayer and fasting (see Mark 9:14-29).

A lifestyle of prayer and fasting makes one truly set apart from the world and ready for Christ to use as a powerful vessel of healing in the Kingdom of God.

Imagine how compassion and love compels one to sacrifice through a lifestyle of prayer and fasting, in order for others to be healed. Love is so powerful because God is love, and it drives out the darkness.

How do you pray for a patient?

Whether you are a healthcare worker, an office staff member, a bus driver, a student, or anything else, simply apply the principles of healing in the Kingdom of God. You must know who you are as a child of God and understand your authority in Christ Jesus to command healing and cast out sickness, as well as the works of the enemy in a person’s life. You can also pray or read the Scriptures and declare the promises of God to your patient or to someone who is sick. Faith comes through hearing the Word of God, so it is important to speak His Word to those who are sick. Here are some examples:

Exodus 23:25

And ye shall serve the Lord your God, and he shall bless thy bread, and thy water; and I will take sickness away from the midst of thee.

And ye shall serve the Lord your God, and he shall bless thy bread, and thy water; and I will take sickness away from the midst of thee.

Isaiah 53:5

But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

This verse can be made into a powerful declaration of prayer:

In Jesus’ name, I am healed by the stripes of Jesus! He was wounded and bruised for my transgressions and iniquity; He suffered punishments on my behalf so that I can be made whole! Thank You Jesus and I receive Your healing!

John 10:10

The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.

The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.

This verse can be read as an eye-opener, a renewal of the mindset that it is the devil who steals, kills, and destroys, whereas Jesus Christ came so that you may have life and have it abundantly. At the same time, it can also be a declaration of prayer:

In Jesus’ name, I rebuke all the works of the thief in my life, and I receive the abundance that Christ Jesus brings in all aspects of my life!

In Jesus’ name, I rebuke all the works of the thief in my life, and I receive the abundance that Christ Jesus brings in all aspects of my life!

Proverbs 3:7-8

Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the Lord, and depart from evil. It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones.

Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the Lord, and depart from evil. It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones.

This verse can be read and will serve as a reminder that we are not to be wise in our own eyes, but always to fear the LORD and have nothing to do with evil, for doing so brings health to our bodies.

There are many more Scriptures that describe God’s promises for healing. Simply allow the Holy Spirit to guide you into the truth as you pray for someone who is sick.

How do I pray for a friend’s health?

The Bible tells us that we are to present our bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, as an act of our spiritual worship. And when we take good care of our body, we are glorifying God with it (see Romans 12:1). If you are worried about a friend’s declining health or if you simply want to wish him/her good health, prayer is the best thing to offer.

How do you pray for a friend’s health? Here are some examples of prayers for you as a guide:

  • Heavenly Father, I thank You for my friend’s health. Thank You for healing her by the stripes of Jesus and reminding her to take good care of her body. Empower her to walk a healthy and disciplined lifestyle by Your Spirit, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
