A Prayer During A Hurricane

Facing a hurricane is one of life’s most terrifying experiences. Even if you’re able to safely take refuge in a shelter, you may still feel the effects of the ravaging winds outside causing destruction. The vast flash floods that often result can sweep away houses, cars, businesses, and so on, but the most devastating consequence of a hurricane is the human casualties it can cause. Even after the storm has passed, the physical and emotional scars left by a hurricane can leave their mark for years to come. However, whether we are anticipating a hurricane, riding out the storm, or dealing with its aftermath, we can take comfort in the truth that our Lord is sovereign over everything (Mark 4:39; Psalm 97:1 The LORD reigneth; let the earth rejoice; Let the multitude of isles be glad thereof .).

Heavenly Father, I thank You because no matter how terrifying the hurricane is, You are sovereign over every atom and molecule in this universe. You are the One who watches over us. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Running to God for Refuge, Literally

Passages like Psalm 46:1, which says that “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble,” remind us to run to God whenever we encounter difficulties. These words don’t just refer to emotional turmoil, however; we should also lean on God when faced with a hurricane. Running to God for refuge does not necessarily mean that God has designated a specific place in town to take shelter. Instead, it means that when we are terrified by the hurricane, we should pray to Him, knowing He is the One who ultimately takes care of us. Just as we run to God in times of emotional distress, we also run to Him in times of terror when weathering a hurricane.

Why do we run to God? It is because God is our protector. In Psalm 91:2, it is written that the Lord is our refuge and fortress. He is the God whom we trust. Psalm 121:5–6 also teaches us that the Lord is our keeper; He is our shade at our right hand. All those passages imply that God is our protector, guarding us just as a refuge or fortress does its inhabitants. We can run to Him in prayer when caught in a hurricane and be at peace because we trust in Him.

Perhaps good questions to reflect upon are: “Who is God to us? Do we trust Him?” If we know that God is our refuge, strong tower, protector, and heavenly Father, then we will trust Him when faced with a hurricane and come before Him in prayer.

Many worries, concerns, and anxieties might be on your mind during a hurricane. You might be worried about your home and whether it will stay in one piece. You might also be concerned about the safety of your friends, loved ones, and neighbors and if they will be able to survive the hurricane.

Whatever our concerns are, the Bible tells us to lift them up to God in prayer. His peace that transcends all understanding shall guard our hearts and minds (Philippians 4:6–7, NIV).

You can pray during a hurricane by just simply talking to God. What are the things that are troubling you? You can open up to God and tell Him the concerns, worries, and fears that you have. Prayer is our way of communing and communicating with our heavenly Father. As you pray, remember to do so from a position of humility before God. Praying from a position of humility—when we know that, ultimately, God is the One on whom we can depend—is the only way we can truly run to Him for refuge.

Father in heaven, keep us safe during the hurricane. I pray for our safety and the safety of our friends, neighbors, and loved ones weathering the storm. I also pray that our home and property won’t be damaged. Keep the flash floods from wrecking our neighborhood. You are the One who watches over us and protects us. We trust You, Lord. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Even if your home and property are damaged or destroyed by the hurricane, you can still hold onto God. This is where faith comes in; we must cling to the truth that God is the One who takes care of us. Even if our material possessions are destroyed, we know that God still holds us. 2 Corinthians 1:3–4 tells us that God is the Father of mercies and our comforter in times of affliction. Whether in good or bad times, God can work all things for the good of those who love Him (Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.). Even amid the destruction of a hurricane, God’s goodness and mercies still follow you (Psalm 23:6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: And I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.). The Lord is faithful, and His mercies are new every morning. You can rise again and be strong through Christ who strengthens you (Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.).

And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose
