A Prayer For Prudence

Just as the Bible calls us to pursue wisdom (Proverbs 3:13-14 Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding. For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold.), we are also called to pursue prudence. In fact, wisdom is always tied to being prudent. In other words, if we are wise, that means we shall also be exercising prudence in all our dealings in life. If we take a look at the original Hebrew for the word “prudent,” we find it also means “shrewd.” We are talking about being shrewd in a good way, when one exercises reason, is purposeful in their thinking, is aware, has foresight, and is sensible. When it comes to its application, prudence means that we are not rash in our decisions. We think and discern our choices carefully before committing to them.

Father in heaven, give me the grace to be more prudent, to stop and think carefully about the decision I am going to make, and to choose that which would honor You. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

The Importance of Prudence

The Bible underscores the importance of prudence when it comes to decision-making and wise living. As mentioned before, the Bible calls us to value wisdom (Proverbs 3:13-14). The Bible describes the value of wisdom as more than money and gold. It is so valuable that it is better for us to lose money and gold than to forfeit wisdom. Wisdom begins in the fear of the Lord, and as we live with wisdom, being prudent is part of that. In Proverbs 1:4, we see that wisdom is there to give prudence to the simple. Wisdom always dwells with prudence (Proverbs 8:12 I wisdom dwell with prudence, and find out knowledge of witty inventions.).

But why does the Bible highlight the importance of prudence, and why, as we pursue and ask God for wisdom (James 1:5; Proverbs 2:6), do we have to look for and exercise it? It is because whether we are prudent or not will greatly affect our lives. In Proverbs 22:3, it is written that the prudent person sees danger and hides himself from it. However, the simple one carelessly goes on and suffers. Whether we are reckless or prudent will have serious repercussions in life, especially as we make decisions big and small.

What does it mean, then, to be prudent? In essence, prudence is giving thought to our steps or decisions so we do not act rashly. Proverbs 14:15 says that the simple person believes everything, but the prudent one gives thought to his steps. Proverbs 14:8 also teaches us that the prudent person discerns his way. Discernment is the exercise of good judgment, especially between what is right and what is almost right. However, prudence is not merely an intellectual trait in which one’s pattern of thinking is inclined to exercise reason, anticipate possible outcomes, etc. It is more about the fear of God, where wisdom begins (Proverbs 9:10). We are talking about reverence before God. So, the ultimate guiding factor as we weigh our choices is that we want to honor God as we make our decisions (1 Corinthians 10:31 So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God.).

So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God.

Asking God for Prudence

While the passages that we will be using make mention of wisdom, they also pertain to prudence. As mentioned above, wisdom and prudence are always tied, and so it is with discernment.

In (Proverbs 16:16 How much better is it to get wisdom than gold! and to get understanding rather to be chosen than silver!), the Bible tells us that we are to seek wisdom, that getting wisdom is better than gold, and that understanding should be chosen above silver. If God calls us to seek wisdom, including prudence, how much will He consent to give it to those who ask? James 1:5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. tells us that as we navigate through the challenges of life, God gives wisdom generously to us if we ask. He does not give it to us in small increments, but, rather, He is generous in giving to all those who ask in faith.

Proverbs 2:3-6 also tells us that if we call out for insight and raise our voices for understanding, seeking these as we would search for silver and hidden treasures, then we will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God because God gives wisdom. From His mouth come knowledge and understanding. God wants us to come to Him and ask Him for the wisdom and prudence that we need. As we ask, He generously gives.

Heavenly Father, I come before You with humility, knowing that from You comes wisdom and prudence. Help me to always be prudent as I make decisions in my life; may I always give thought to my steps and discern my way. Help me always make wise decisions that would glorify You. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Being prudent also takes grace. It is God’s empowering grace that helps us exercise prudence whenever we are tempted to make hasty decisions. But whatever decision it is that we are trying to make, may our reverence and love for God and dedication to His Word, always be our guiding light.
