As believers of Christ, we are called to be the salt and light to the world (Matthew 5:13-16). Indeed, that means we are to go to the fatherless orphans and show care and mercy to them, give essential needs to those who are homeless, help the widowed or single moms, go to places where access to water, education, and other needs is very difficult, etc. We are also to minister and be the salt and light to those who are in prison. Some Christians may be taken aback by it since we’re dealing with men and women who have committed crimes, perhaps very heinous crimes. However, these are also the very people whom Christ died for. If someone like the Apostle Paul, who persecuted Christians, brought them to prison, and even authorized the execution of some, was changed by the Gospel, what about those in prison? We must start by preaching the Gospel to them (Romans 10:14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?).
Heavenly Father, stir up compassion in my heart to minister, reach out, and pray for those in jail or prison. Remind me that they, too, are men and women who need grace and salvation, which can only be found in Christ. Help me start by remembering them in prayers. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

What Can You Request in Prayer for Someone in Jail?
As you start to have compassion for those in jail or prison, you don’t have to necessarily go out and join a prison ministry, though that would be nice. You can start small by simply praying for them. If you also know of someone in jail, aside from visiting them occasionally to cater to their needs and see how they’re doing, you can also constantly remember them in prayers.
The most important prayer that you can say for someone who is in jail or prison regards their salvation. Pray that they will get the opportunity to hear the good news of God becoming man in Christ, living the sinless life that they should have lived, dying the death they should have died, being resurrected from the dead, and offering forgiveness and eternal life to those who repent and believe (Matthew 3:2). Pray for the Holy Spirit to soften their hearts, turning their hearts of stone to hearts of flesh so that they may receive and believe the Gospel (Ezekiel 36:26). You can also pray for the Holy Spirit to open their spiritual eyes so that they may see Christ for who He is, the Messiah (John 9:25 He answered and said, Whether he be a sinner or no, I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see.).

You may also keep their appeal or trial in your prayers, but this depends on a person’s case. Someone may be temporarily in jail because they cannot pay the bail (which you can also pray for), the crime they are being tried for is unbailable, or the court didn’t grant them a trial. Regardless, they’re in jail, and their trials are ongoing. As such, you can pray that justice shall indeed be served and that the judiciary can administrate effectively. Some people in prison may even have a pending appeal. Perhaps it’s a retrial being petitioned, parole being applied, or an appeal being made regarding a convicted case. In that case, you can pray for the concerns of those in prison, whether in favor of the appeal or petition being made and for an effective administration of justice.
After that, consider their potential personal concerns. They may have families outside and may be concerned about their well-being. Pray for provision, well-being, protection, and good health for their families. You can also pray for the well-being of someone who is in jail or prison. They may be concerned for their own safety in prison since there are dangerous people there and conflicts among inmates. You can pray for any personal concerns they might have.
Heavenly Father, I pray for those who are in jail or prison that they shall have the opportunity to hear the Gospel from those who do prison ministry and that You will soften their hearts to repent and receive it. I pray that whatever pending matters they have in court go smoothly and favorably and justice is administrated effectively. You know their concerns, and I pray You will care for them. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

How Can You Pray for Someone in Jail?
If someone you know in jail or prison is not yet a believer in Christ, then the most important prayer you can say regards their salvation. You can also pray for their needs. If you know someone in jail or prison, you can ask about their needs and remember their concerns in your prayers.
How does that translate to practical application? For one, you can join prison ministries that go directly to jails or prisons and minister there. You can then directly interact with prisoners, know about their needs, pray for them, and even pray for them to know Christ. You can also pray specifically for those you know who are in prison. Schedule a specific time during the day or week to pray for them, or pray at any random time. For example, while commuting on a bus, if the Holy Spirit moves you to pray, by all means, take the time to pray. Philippians 4:6-7 tells us we must lift our prayer requests to God. In this case, we take the burdens of those in jail or prison and lift them up to God. In essence, you just have to set aside a time to pray for them, remember or think about what their needs may be, and then lift them up to God in prayer.

A Prayer for Someone in Jail
Father in heaven, I pray for someone I know who is currently in jail and is being tried for a serious crime. I pray that his lawyer shall do his job with excellence and competence and that his lawyer shall be able to win his case. I pray that the court of law shall administrate justice effectively with fairness. I pray for the emotional and financial burden that his trial is causing him and his family. Bring them comfort and grace in such times, and provide for them as they pay for the necessary costs. Most of all, I pray that You help them see that Christ is their ultimate need in such a time. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
Remember that as you pray for someone in jail or prison, you must do it out of love. As Christians, love is the very motivation in everything we do. We also do everything for the glory of God (1 Corinthians 10:31). In 1 Corinthians 16:14, it is written that we should let everything we do, even saying the prayers for someone in jail or prison, be done out of love. We love others out of our love for God.
