A Call to Mission Prayer

Our mission is at the heart of everything that we do as Christians. So what is the mission? Our mission is to go and make disciples out of every nation. In Mark 16, it is written that we should all go to the world and proclaim the Gospel to everyone so that those who may be drawn near to Christ shall not be condemned anymore. That is commonly known as “The Great Commission.” Understanding the Great Commission, one can see why proclaiming the Gospel is at the heart of every Christian ministry. It is because the Gospel is our ultimate need. All Christians are called to make disciples – whether in your city, school, workplace, or even abroad – when you get the chance. You are doing missions even as an office worker—it’s just that you are not a full-time missionary but a tentmaker instead. (You may research the term “tentmaker” in missions.)

Matthew 28:19

Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

Mark 16:15-16

15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

Heavenly Father, I pray that You would give me the wisdom and discernment that I need so that I may discern Your will in my life.

A Call to Mission Prayer

How do you pray for a mission?

There are so many different things that you could pray for when it comes to missions. One, for example, is praying to God about whether to get into full-time ministry as a missionary or not. Discerning God’s call for your life requires a lot of praying and asking God for wisdom and discernment.

James 1:5-8

5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

6 But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.

7 For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.

8 A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.

If you are praying for this matter, here is one simple prayer you can pray:

Heavenly Father, I pray that You would give me the wisdom and discernment that I need so that I may discern Your will in my life. Open my ears, Father, that I may be sensitive to Your leading and calling. Give me the boldness to never be afraid or hesitant when accepting whatever calling You have for me. My life is not my own, but Yours. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Heavenly Father, I pray that You would give me the wisdom and discernment that I need so that I may discern Your will in my life.

Another thing that you can pray for is the mission itself. For example, if your church has a mission in a certain country, you can pray for that mission. You don’t have to be a missionary in that mission to pray for it. Even if you are just a supporting financial partner of the missionary (which you should be if you are not doing the mission work itself), you can and should pray for the mission. Here is one of the ways you can pray for a mission:

Father in heaven, I pray for divine protection both spiritually and physically upon our missionaries in [country]. I pray that they shall always be in good health so that they may do their ministry work efficiently. Give them the wisdom they need as they connect with the locals and minister to them. Empower them, Holy Spirit—help them be courageous and bold in sharing the Gospel. I pray for a fruitful mission, Father. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Heavenly Father, I pray that You would give me the wisdom and discernment that I need so that I may discern Your will in my life.

Philippians 1:3-7

3 I thank my God upon every remembrance of you,

4 Always in every prayer of mine for you all making request with joy,

5 For your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now;

6 Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:

7 Even as it is meet for me to think this of you all, because I have you in my heart; inasmuch as both in my bonds, and in the defence and confirmation of the gospel, ye all are partakers of my grace.

1 Thessalonians 5:25

Brethren, pray for us.

Heavenly Father, I pray that You would give me the wisdom and discernment that I need so that I may discern Your will in my life.

How do you pray for persecuted believers?

The reality is that some nations that have missionaries doing missions in them are hostile to Christianity. Yet by God’s grace and because He is sovereign, there are still Gentiles who are being reached out to and surrendering their lives to Christ. However, most of these believers in nations hostile to Christianity are going through persecution because of their faith. Even our missionaries are not exempted from the persecution and danger of being a Christian.

This aspect is also one of the important things you should pray for. Here is a guide as to how you can pray for it:

Heavenly Father, I pray for the safety of our missionaries and church in the nation of [country]. I pray that you would protect them from any harm and danger they face as they practice their faith and proclaim Christ to others. Give them the graces they need, Father, to persevere and keep running the race. I thank You because they are content and have joy in Christ no matter what hardship they are going through. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

How can we encourage Christians who are being persecuted?

The New Testament is filled with verses about encouragement amidst the persecution some believers are going through. Here are some of them:

John 16:33

These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

Heavenly Father, I pray that You would give me the wisdom and discernment that I need so that I may discern Your will in my life.

Romans 5:3-5

3 And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience;

4 And patience, experience; and experience, hope:

5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.

Romans 8:35-39

35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?

36 As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.

37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.

38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,

39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

2 Corinthians 4:8-11

8 We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair;

9 Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed;

10 Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body.

11 For we which live are always delivered unto death for Jesus’ sake, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our mortal flesh.

1 Peter 4:12-14

12 Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you:

13 But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ’s sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.

14 If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified.

Persecution and suffering are always part of the Christian life. This is a broken world. Not everyone knows Christ. Some have their hearts hardened to the core. We should consider it an honor and privilege to suffer for the sake of Christ and do what is right. Even in times of persecution and suffering, we still have hope because of Christ. No amount of persecution will ever separate us from Christ. We ought to count it all as joy when we encounter trials in life. These trials produce steadfastness in us by the grace of God, which then makes us perfect and complete in the future. In other words, suffering sanctifies us to become more like Jesus so that we may be like Him 100% in the greater future that is to come. Also, no matter what tribulations we may encounter, we ought to take heart, for Christ has already overcome the world. Remember that we are fighting a won battle.

Heavenly Father, I pray that You would give me the wisdom and discernment that I need so that I may discern Your will in my life.

James 1:2-4

2 My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations;

3 Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.

4 But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.

Whether local or abroad, we are all called to do missions. It is a commandment that we are expected to obey. Nonetheless, genuine believers do it not just because it is a commandment but also because they have seen the value of Christ and how He changes lives. That is why they can’t help but share Christ with others. That goes to show that a Christian who does not share Christ at all probably has not encountered Christ and seen the value of His work.
