How to Be a Prayer Partner

God commanded us to pray to Him. One of the things we should pray to God for is the well-being of our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. In other words, as Christians, we are called to pray for fellow believers. That is one of the reasons why a Christian should be part of a church community. It is a means that God has ordained for us to receive grace. If a Christian is going through tough times, he is edified and encouraged whenever the church community prays for him or her. As Christians, we are commanded to love our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. Jesus said that the world would know that we are His disciples by how we treat our fellow brothers and sisters and that we should love them. In 1 John, it is also written that if we truly are born of God and have known God, Who is love, we shall also love others. It says that love is not just mere words; we put them into action. One of the ways we put it into action is by praying for our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ.

John 13:34-35

34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.

35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

1 John 4:7

Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.

Heavenly Father, You are the God Who gives grace and strength.

1 John 3:18

My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.

What is a prayer buddy?

A prayer buddy or partner is a fellow brother or sister in Christ who continually prays for you and with you. Usually, it is someone from church with whom you are close. Most of the time, a Christian’s accountability partner is also their prayer partner. This is not limited to just being between two Christians; it could be between three Christians or even four. But the fewer people, the better. You also have to be wise in whom you select as your accountability partner and prayer partner. The whole church does not need to know every personal thing going on in your life, and it is unwise to make everything known to everyone. That does not mean you cannot ask other people in the church to pray for you; instead, when it comes to very personal matters, it is wiser to keep it confined to a tiny group of people who are your accountability and prayer partner/s.

A prayer partner is someone who will be with you through thick and thin. These are your fellow brothers or sisters in arms, who will stick with you no matter what adversity may come. They are like your covenant brothers or sisters; you all promise to be accountable, check up on each other, protect each other, and pray for each other. The very goal is to help one another in growing in sanctification as Christians. As mentioned, the church community is essential; only in a church community can we find brothers and sisters in the faith who will pray for us and bear our burdens as if they were theirs. They are there to weep with us, rejoice with us, and always remember us in prayers. We can only find them in the church. Also, it is essential to note that, preferably, accountability and prayer partners are of the same gender, except for husband and wife. Apart from God’s command that we are to guard our hearts, it is wiser and better to have someone of the same gender as an associate because there are personal matters that only someone of the same gender can relate to. For example, if a man needs prayers regarding pursuing someone or has issues regarding sexual purity, the best accountability and prayer partner to have would be a fellow man.

How do you pray for others?

If you are a prayer partner of someone, then one of the things that you should do is always check up on your accountability or prayer partner. You will only know what the person needs prayer for if you ask. As you ask the person how he or she is doing, you will see what hardships or struggles the person needs prayer for. You can also encourage your fellow brother or sisters in Christ and leave them edified. You can also directly ask the person if there are any specific prayer requests they want you to include. For example, suppose you asked your prayer partner how he is doing, and he told you that he is having a hard time at work and has some prayer requests. In that case, he wants you to pray for things such as strength and grace to excel at work, boldness to preach the Gospel in the workplace, and good health for his family. Here is an example of how you can pray for him:

Heavenly Father, You are the God Who gives grace and strength. I pray for my brother name of the person, that You will provide him with the grace and strength to be excellent in his work. Remind him that he is working for You and Your glory as he works. I pray that the way he works shall be a good example for the unbelievers. Empower him, Holy Spirit, to be bold and unashamed in preaching Christ to his workmates. I also pray for good health for him and his family and protection from sicknesses. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

You can also pray prayers for your prayer partner with whatever you want to include for him or her. What you pray for your prayer partner is not necessarily limited to what he or she requests you pray for him or her. For example, if you want to pray for the person to always walk in the way of wisdom and always delight to do God’s will, by all means, pray that for the person even if it is not included in the prayer requests they gave you. As a prayer partner, your end goal is to pray for the well-being of your partner. Whatever you pray for him or her, you pray out of a renewed mind; for that which is pleasing and acceptable in the eyes of God.

Romans 12:2

And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Here is an example of a prayer that is undoubtedly acceptable and pleasing in the eyes of God and is according to His will:

God of wisdom, You are the God Who gives wisdom generously to those who ask You. I pray for name of the person, that he shall always desire wisdom more than money and other earthly things. I pray that he shall always delight in the fear of You and that he shall always ponder the path of wisdom and turn his feet away from evil. I pray that he shall always be blameless in his ways and that he shall continuously pursue to live a holy life. I pray that he shall always depend on Your grace and mercy. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Heavenly Father, You are the God Who gives grace and strength.

The key to knowing what to pray for your prayer partner, apart from the prayer requests he or she gave you, is to pray out of a renewed mind, which we can have only if we always read and meditate on God’s Word. The renewal of our minds is the work of the Holy Spirit. With that, we can know what God’s will is and what is pleasing and acceptable to Him and then pray those things for our prayer partners.

How do you tell someone you’re praying for them?

Whenever you ask a person how he or she is doing or ask to pray for him or her, it is good to reassure your prayer partner that you are praying for them and their prayer requests. Also, you can message them and let them know out of the blue that you remember them in your prayers. For example, at a random time when you’ve just prayed for your prayer partner, you can message him or her with a bit of encouragement and with reassurance that you just prayed for them at that moment. You will not only support your prayer partner with the small encouragement that you gave, but you shall also bless them by letting them know that you indeed remember them in your prayers. It is a small gesture, yet it will mean a lot to them, especially if they are going through hardships.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

16 Rejoice evermore.

17 Pray without ceasing.

18 In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

Heavenly Father, You are the God Who gives grace and strength.

Also, the prayer that you pray with your prayer partners can be prayers of thanksgiving. No matter what hardships we are going through, there is always something to thank God for. We are always to rejoice and thank God, for it is His will for us. That also includes thanking God for breakthroughs or things to be celebrated. The Bible tells us to not only weep with those who weep but also rejoice with those who rejoice—thanking God and giving Him all the credit.
