How To Do A Breakfast Prayer

Christians always pray before we eat. When we pray before we eat, we offer a prayer of thanksgiving towards God. We thank Him for the mercy and grace that He has shown us by providing for us and sustaining us with the food we are about to eat. Depending on what time of the day you are eating, your prayers may differ. The common theme of the prayer is still a prayer of thanksgiving, but the things that you thank God for may be different. For example, you may include thanking God for a new day ahead that you are about to have as you eat breakfast, whereas before eating dinner, you may thank God for the productive day you had. Whether it is breakfast, brunch, lunch, snack, or dinner, we should thank God because whatever we are eating, it was all because of His grace and mercy. Just because your day has not started yet does not mean that there is nothing to thank God for. There are always things for us to be grateful to God for. That is why we must continually give Him thanks, no matter the circumstances.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

16 Rejoice evermore.

17 Pray without ceasing.

18 In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

Heavenly Father, You are merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love.

What is the purpose of a breakfast prayer?

The purpose of praying while you eat breakfast is to thank God. You thank God for the breakfast that you are about to eat. But when you thank God, you don’t just thank God because of the breakfast. You thank God because He has been faithful towards you and your family and that His love is steadfast.

Having breakfast to eat is just one part of the bigger picture of God’s steadfast love and faithfulness towards You. Even if you are going through a season of hardship, there is still something to thank God for. The Bible teaches us that God’s mercies are new every morning and never come to an end. One of the things that you can thank God for because of His never-ending mercy is that you were still able to wake up. When we sleep, we are unconscious. However, we are still breathing, which is an example of God’s mercy at every moment of our lives.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.

23 They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.

Heavenly Father, You are merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love.

How do you pray a breakfast prayer?

When praying a breakfast prayer, the central theme of the prayer is a prayer of thanksgiving. You can thank God for the things we mentioned above. However, aside from thanking God for the food and His mercies, you can also pray for the upcoming day you are about to have. For example, suppose you are about to have breakfast as a family. In that case, you as a family can pray for the upcoming exam for one of the kids. You can also pray for matters regarding the parents’ workday or even pray for safety as you all head off to where you are all going. You can pray while you have breakfast because you are still about to begin your day, as compared to dinner, where your day has already ended, and you are praying for the future to come.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Heavenly Father, You are merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love.

Heavenly Father, You are merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love. Thank You for the food that we are about to eat today. I pray that You will sanctify this food and that the food we are about to eat shall nourish our bodies and give us the energy we need throughout the day. Thank You for this new day ahead of us. Thank You that we are still able to wake up each morning. I pray that we will have a productive day today. Give me the grace to glorify you at work today and for my son to glorify You in his studies. Help him, as he is about to take his exam today, so that he may excel in it. Keep us safe from any harm today. May we live today wisely for Your glory. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

If you observe in the prayer example, we thank God for the food and other things because of His grace and mercy. We also pray for the things that lie ahead in the day like work, studies, and the exam. At the end of the prayer, we pray to God that we should live the day we are about to live for His glory. That is an important point to remember. Remember that our primary end goal is to glorify God. Therefore, it is good to keep that in mind as we pray so that we may desire and pray that how we live that day shall be glorifying to Him.

Galatians 2:20

I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

Heavenly Father, You are merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love.

As Christians, we are all crucified with Christ. It is no longer us who live, but Christ who lives in us. As we live the day we are about to have, we don’t live it for ourselves, but for Christ. With that, it is only fitting that as we pray during breakfast, we should remind ourselves and pray to God to help us live for Christ and His glory. It is also important to note that we are dependent on God’s grace every day. That is why we must always pray before we start our day. One of the best times for that is before eating breakfast!
