How to Pray for My Husband to Be Saved

While it is God’s command for a Christian woman to choose a Christian man to become her husband, that is not always the case. Some women are already married before encountering Jesus in their life. Most probably, married women who become Christians have unbelieving husbands. Though the Bible commands us not to be unequally yoked with unbelievers, that does not mean that a Christian woman should immediately divorce her husband. Their marriage is still considered sacred. The wife should pray for her husband to be saved by all means. Of course, praying is not enough by itself; she should also preach the Gospel to her husband.

What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.

Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?

 

What does the Bible say about unbelieving husbands?

What the Bible says about sinners or anyone who is not in Christ is what it says about unbelieving husbands too. First, we have to understand sin. God is a holy God. He is just, and sin is evil in His sight. Because God is a just God, He must punish sin. The punishment for sin is death. Also, because of our sins, we are recipients of God’s wrath and are separated from Him. The separation between God and us is a moral separation. God is holy, and we are not. We cannot dwell in and be with God, not just because we are recipients of His wrath but also because due to our sins, we can’t stand His holiness.

He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness

Your husband may think that he is exempted from the wrath of God because he tries to be a good person. He may have donated to charity, done good deeds for others, participated in advocacy groups, etc. However, none of those things matter because no one has never sinned—even your husband. The Bible says that everyone has sinned and has fallen short of the glory of God. Everyone is an enemy of God and is a recipient of His wrath because of their sin. That is the status of your husband if he is not in Christ.

For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God

That is why we thank God for sending His Son Jesus. Jesus lived the perfect and sinless life we should have lived, died the death we should have died, and, on the third day, He resurrected from the grave. He proved that He is indeed the Son of God and has conquered death. Anyone who repents and believes in Him can find forgiveness and eternal life in Christ. Christ has already paid the penalty for our sins and has satisfied the wrath of God. Not only that, in Christ your husband is not just forgiven, but he is also being sanctified to become more like Jesus. If he had temper problems before, he shall grow to become more patient and gentler by God’s grace and the work of the Holy Spirit.

Christ is the greatest treasure anyone can have. Being in Christ means one becomes adopted as God’s child. Being in Christ also means that we have already been freed from the slavery of sin. It means that we are not bound to it anymore and that by the grace of God, we can say no to sin and pursue a holy life. Christ becomes our peace and joy no matter what hardships we may go through. Whenever we need help, we can freely come and approach God’s throne of grace and speak to Him, Who is our heavenly Father. In Christ, we go from being an enemy of God to being a child of God.

For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.

Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.

However, these things are possible only if we repent and believe in the person and work of Christ. That is why you have to preach the Gospel to your husband. As you preach the Gospel to him or as you connect him to some other believers who could disciple him, there are things that you can pray for him to have.

Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving;

How do you pray for salvation?

For you to know what and how to pray for salvation for your husband, there are things that we should point out first. One is that salvation is of God and from God. In other words, it is God’s work in a person’s heart. That is why the Bible teaches us about God turning a person’s heart of stone into a heart of flesh. If a person’s heart is hardened, no matter how many times you preach the Gospel to your husband, even if he has the highest IQ, he will never repent. Salvation is the work of God’s grace alone in our lives. We repent and trust the finished work of Christ all because God’s grace is at work in our hardened hearts and regenerates them.

[Ezekiel 36:26]

A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.

[Titus 3:5]

Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;

The regeneration of our hearts is the work of the Holy Spirit in us. It is God giving life to us. Unless God’s grace works in us and gives life to us first, we will always remain dead in our sins. It is like throwing a life vest at a skeleton. Even if the life vest might have saved him, that can never happen because the skeleton is dead and can’t grab the life vest. We can grab the life vest, which is Christ, only because God gave life to us, who were skeletons or dead to our trespasses. That is the grace and mercy of God.

The hand of the Lord was upon me, and carried me out in the spirit of the Lord, and set me down in the midst of the valley which was full of bones,

And caused me to pass by them round about: and, behold, there were very many in the open valley; and, lo, they were very dry.

And he said unto me, Son of man, can these bones live? And I answered, O Lord God, thou knowest.

Again he said unto me, Prophesy upon these bones, and say unto them, O ye dry bones, hear the word of the Lord.

Lastly, we are saved because the Holy Spirit opened our spiritually-blinded eyes. Because of sin, we are blinded to it or are in darkness. No matter how much we hear the Gospel, we can’t see the truth because of spiritual blindness. One good example of that was the Pharisees. With all their intellectual knowledge, they still missed out on the Messiah, Who was right before them. However, the man who was born blind and healed of physical blindness was also healed of spiritual blindness. The man born blind saw Who Christ was and his need for Him. Therefore, he committed to following Christ.

Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

He answered and said, Whether he be a sinner or no, I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see.

In line with everything we have covered, how will you then pray for your husband’s salvation? As you or someone else preaches the Gospel to your husband, you can pray for the Holy Spirit to prepare his heart. That means praying that the Holy Spirit will cause regeneration in his heart and turn his heart of stone into a heart of flesh so that your husband may receive the Gospel and repent. You can also pray for God’s mercy upon him, for His grace to work in your husband’s heart, and for God to open the spiritual eyes of your husband to see his need for Christ.

Here is an example of how you can pray for your husband:

Heavenly Father, You are the God of mercy and grace, Who makes us alive from our trespasses. Holy Spirit, I pray that You would cause regeneration in my husband’s heart. Turn his heart of stone to a heart of flesh so that he may receive the Gospel and repent from his life of sin. Open his spiritually-blinded eyes so that he may see his need for Christ and commit to following Him. I pray that You will give Him the grace to humble himself and to place his faith in the finished work of Christ on the cross. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Even if your husband rejects the Gospel at first, don’t stop praying for him, and don’t stop preaching to him either. It might not be now, but maybe soon he will repent and believe the finished work of Christ. Knowing that salvation is God’s work in a person’s life, something we can hope for is that no matter how evil or prideful a person like your husband is, no one is too far from the grace of God. If God’s grace was able to transform the heart of someone like Paul, how much more hope is there for your husband?
