A Good Prayer When You Are Rejected

Rejection is one of the most painful experiences you can go through. What makes rejection so painful is the loss associated with it, which then causes grief. We grieve not just because of the thing or person that we lost but also because we lose the visions, dreams, and things we looked forward to. It is an experience that must be processed deeply.

Father in heaven, even in times of pain caused by the rejection that I experience, I know that You are there. To where shall I go, LORD? Wherever I go, Your presence is there. That is my comfort that even in such times, You are with me. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

What Comfort Does The Bible Give About Rejection?

The Bible comforts various human emotions, even the pain and grief of rejection. We can take comfort in the truth that we have a Lord and Savior who experienced rejection. Jesus was welcomed by the people upon His triumphant entry into Jerusalem. They spread their cloaks on the road, cut branches from the trees, and put them on the road (Matthew 21:1-11). Yet, in the end, those same people shouted, “Crucify Him.” These were the people to whom Jesus ministered and did miracles for.

Even the closest followers of Jesus rejected Him. Peter once said that He would never leave Jesus and would even go to prison and death with Him (Luke 22:31-34), yet Peter left Him and denied Him three times. The disciples ran and left Jesus when He was arrested. A God whose heart is only made to love and save was rejected and put to death by His very creation.

How can the truth that Jesus also experienced rejection comfort us? It is comforting because we know that we have a God and High Priest who can sympathize with us, as written in (For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need. Hebrews 4:15-16), because He, while living in the flesh, experienced pain, human weakness, and rejection. When Jesus tells us that He knows and understands our pain, He means it. That is why, as we grieve over a rejection, we can come to Christ. Christ is the person whom we should run to whenever we feel burdened (Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28) whose yoke is easy and whose burden is light (Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. Matthew 11:29-30). We can come to His gentle and tender care, for He is our good shepherd.

 

 

Christ Himself is the greatest comfort we can have because we have been given the Father’s chosen servant, as written in Isaiah 42:1-3, whom a bruised reed He will not break and a smoldering wick He will not quench. Being rejected may place us in a state of being a bruised reed, a fragile situation. Fortunately, we have a gentle and tender Christ who carefully handles bruised reeds.

Just as we share with Christ in suffering, we also share with Him in comfort (2 Corinthians 1:3-5). God is the God of comfort and the Father of mercies who comforts us in times of affliction. His mercies are new every morning, and His love is steadfast (It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness. Lamentations 3:22-23).

How To Pray When Feeling Rejected?

When we are rejected, we come to God in prayer by being honest about our feelings. If something painful happens to us and we call a friend to meet up, share the experience, and express our emotions, surely we must do it with God first. When we pray to God, we can cry, grieve, and lay everything bare before Him. The Bible says in (The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit. Psalm 34:18) that the LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.

As you pray and open yourself honestly to God, you can also offer truths that comfort us. For example, the Bible teaches us that God is sovereign and that everything works together for our benefit, as written in (And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28). You can confess that truth in your prayer, which also reminds you of who God is over your circumstance.

Heavenly Father, You are all-knowing. You know all the pain and hurt I have right now because of a rejection. I have loved those people with all that I am, being selfless to them and putting their interests above mine. Yet, because of a mistake, I was abandoned and rejected. I take comfort in the truth that You are always with me; those men may forsake me, but You never will. Whatever circumstance I am in, I know that what evil comes to me, You will use it for good, for You work everything for my ultimate benefit. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

One of the attributes of God is that He is all-knowing, as shown in Psalm 139:1-6. The truth that God is all-knowing gives us comfort; when we pray, it’s not like we are trying to make Him understand or inform Him of things that He does not know. He knows everything, so we can be confident when we pray in times of grief that our God knows what we are praying about to Him.
