A Good Prayer When Misunderstood

Misunderstandings and misconceptions can arise from several kinds of circumstances. This article will explore being misunderstood by people even though you had nothing but good intentions. You know you love and value others, yet due to a particular circumstance, you are misunderstood, misperceived, and, worst of all, judged. It wouldn’t be inaccurate to describe this as being “persecuted.” The reality is that even Christians encounter and experience such situations, not just from unbelievers but even in a Christian setting within the Church community.

Father in heaven, whenever people misunderstand me, what brings me comfort is that You see everything. Even if I am misunderstood because others barely know the truth, You know it all. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Painful Judgments

It is not so surprising when one is misunderstood, misperceived, or judged by non-believers in a context outside the church, as your values and convictions are entirely different from theirs. They are dead in sin while you are alive in Christ (Romans 6:11 In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.). Being in Christ and finding life in Christ changes your perception of life. You now view your life as something that worships God (Galatians 2:20), and you no longer live for yourself but for Christ (Romans 14:8 If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.). Therefore, in everything that you do, you strive to supplement your faith with virtue, live out godly values, and pursue godliness (Titus 2:11-12, Matthew 5:16). Non-believers who can not identify with you in such things are prone to misunderstand you. For example, it is common for men who pursue purity and reserve themselves for their future wives to be misunderstood as men who like men rather than women.

In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.).

However, the dynamics of our relationships are different when it comes to a Church community setting. Relationships are very complex, and there is always a chance of being misunderstood, misperceived, and judged even by fellow believers. There are many different reasons why such a thing could happen. One is their sinful nature. While indeed they are believers, being a Christian does not mean overnight perfection. They are still growing in godliness and Christlikeness, just as you are (Philippians 1:6, Romans 8:29). Another reason could be that they have a different maturity level than yours. For example, as you confront them with their gossip in the most gentle way possible, you might be misunderstood as self-righteous or even a killjoy (Proverbs 16:28, Proverbs 20:19). If you deal with gossip judiciously the way the Bible prescribes (for there are times when we are to rebuke others in love), you may be judged as proud and self-righteous (Proverbs 27:5, 2 Timothy 4:2).

We are talking about scenarios in which you advocate what the Bible says. For example, you may tell believers who are focused on themselves what the Bible calls us to do, which is to carry each other’s burdens, serve one another, and love one another (Galatians 6:2, Galatians 5:13, Romans 12:10). The Church community is not to prioritize only self-care but also mutual care, when believers care for one another just as Christ did for us. We are called to exhibit the preeminent love of Christ toward others. So, as you preach that to other believers, a range of different misconceptions and judgments may arise if such biblical truths do not taste good to them. This is especially true in a dangerous age in which the philosophy of self-care is used to justify self-centeredness. This is contrary to what the Bible teaches us, which is to die to oneself (a certain degree of self-care or soul care is biblical, but not to the point of being self-centered in the guise of self-care).

In other words, you are being misunderstood, misperceived, and therefore judged because of the difference in your level of spiritual maturity. It could also be that because of the good deeds, acts of kindness, and love you have shown others, your mistakes are highlighted more and you become alienated. Yet deep in your heart, you know you only meant well and that you genuinely love other people.

The examples, causes, and scenarios we have shown are just some of many. However, if there is one thought or longing that we wish to capture, it is this: “Lord, if only they knew.” This is a normal longing whenever a scenario or circumstance in which you are judged or misunderstood comes up.

A God Who Sees Beyond the Surface

Our very comfort in such times is that while others only look at the surface, God can see the deepest recesses of your heart. Psalm 139:1-4 tells us how much God knows about us. He knows what we will say even before a word is on our tongue. He knows when we rise or lie down. Such knowledge is too wonderful for humans to have. It shows how God knows about us and sees beyond the superficial. Psalm 44:21 teaches us how God sees our hearts’ secret realms. Others may misunderstand or even judge us despite our having the best intentions and acting in love toward others, but God sees the heart. Others may only see your mistakes or perhaps misunderstand your actions because they only see the superficial. Perhaps no one sees those moments where you are thinking about the well-being of others, considering them more significant than yourself, seeking their interest ahead of yours, and trying to find ways to show goodness to them. But God sees it all, for He sees in secret (Matthew 6:6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.).

This is our comfort, that while others may misunderstand, misperceive, and even judge us, God knows everything. That simple truth alone could bring us comfort and empower us to keep doing good for others even if we are misunderstood for just simply doing what the Bible tells us to do. Our mistakes are highlighted more than our good deeds, but even if others don’t see our heart’s intention to love them, God does. Great is our reward from God (Galatians 6:9).

A Simple Prayer

If you find yourself misunderstood, you can pray a simple prayer in which you remind yourself that God sees everything. You can pour out to God your hurts, pains, and frustrations. Then, you reorient as you remind yourself that in the end, it does not matter what others think, for God sees everything and is honored by what you have done (Galatians 1:10). It would also be beneficial to remind yourself in prayer that your identity does not rest upon the approval of others; regardless of whether you make mistakes or not, you are fully loved by God. (Ephesians 1:4-5, Romans 8:38-39, Isaiah 26:3-4)

Father in heaven, when I am misunderstood or judged, I take comfort that You see everything. Others may judge my actions and misperceive me by only looking at the superficial and not getting the whole picture, but You know and see all of it. What matters is that I have honored You and done what You call me to do. In Christ, I am always loved, and nothing can take such love away from me. In this lifetime, I live not for others but for You. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

In Galatians 2:20, Paul mentions that he has been crucified with Christ; it is no longer he that lives but Christ Who lives in him. So, the life that he lived, he lived not for himself but for Christ. May that passage empower and remind us that, in the end, we are not living for others but for Christ. We are servants of Christ and not of men. We have only One to please, and that is God.
