A Prayer To Be Humble

Desiring and praying to be humble is one of the greatest and noblest desires and prayers any believer could have. If a believer wants to be humble, that is evidence of the Holy Spirit in a person’s life. A person has a changed heart because their heart desires to honor and glorify God and become more like Christ. The act of praying to become humble is already humility in itself. It shows that a believer is not prideful but humble to acknowledge that they cannot live a humble life on their own strength and capability. It is only by the grace of God and the power of the Holy Spirit in their life. Hence, they come to God in prayer.

Heavenly Father, help me to be humble, that my life in every area of it shall be marked with humility. Give me the grace to be humble like Christ and point people to who You are through my display of humility. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

What Does The Bible Say About Humility?

Philippians 2:3-4 is one of the famous Bible verses that teaches us about humility. Paul, writing to the church in Philippi, teaches that if we are to be humble, we are not self-conceited. That means not being puffed with ourselves, thinking that we are something or that whatever we have done is all because of us. We should remember that it is all because of God’s grace that we can be where we are right now (1 Corinthians 15:10 But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.).

Paul also teaches the church in Philippi that humility, not being self-conceited, counts others as more significant than ourselves and putting their interest above ours. Sometimes, we think that humility is about devaluing ourselves. However, that is not humility. Humility is, as we know our value, we forget about ourselves and put others first.

A good example of this is Christ, whom Paul used as an example in his letter. Despite being God Himself, Christ came down on earth not to be served but to serve (Matthew 20:28). Paul wrote that Jesus emptied Himself and took the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. Being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

Christ knows who He is. He is the Son of God. He is divine. However, He emptied Himself and prioritized our well-being while serving and dying for us. Knowing the humility that Jesus displayed also drives us to pursue humility and be like Christ.

How Can I Pray To Be Humble?

When you pray to become humble, you come before God’s throne of grace and ask Him for the grace you need (Hebrews 4:16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.). A prayer to become more humble asks God for the grace to be humble. That is because we, alone with our strength, will find it difficult, if not impossible, to be humble. In Philippians 4:13, it is written that we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us. That means we can live in humility through Christ, who strengthens us. It is not by our own strength.

Hebrews 4:16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

In (2 Corinthians 12:9 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.), it is written that God’s grace is sufficient for us. It is in times of weakness that His power is made perfect. Therefore, when we find it hard to be humble, God’s grace becomes sufficient by helping us become humble. Hence, God’s power is made perfect in our weakness. God’s grace didn’t just appear to save us from sin and eternal death. It is also there to help us live godly lives, part of which is humility (Titus 2:11-12).

Father in heaven, help me to live in humility. Give me the grace that I need never to be proud and think of myself highly. Help me to be humble just as Christ was and always put others and their interests above mine and count them as more significant than me. May the humility of Christ continually stir me to be humble, forget about myself, and always think more of others. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

There is grace in the Gospel that helps us live in humility. That is Christ’s life where, despite being God, He came not to be served but to serve. The thought that if Christ could have demanded to be served but lived humbly and put our well-being first, how much more me? That shows that God’s love, grace, and mercy in the person of Jesus Christ drives us to live in a manner that would honor Him.
