A Drug Addict’s Prayer

Sadly, some people are suffering from drug addiction. Drug addiction is when a person cannot stop using drugs, even if they have adverse effects, because of something temporarily good that they get from them. Even if drugs harm them physically and mentally, they still take them because they feel good about using them. There is a stimulant that is satisfying or gratifying for them and because they are so addicted to drugs, they basically can’t live without them.

We have to understand that drug addiction, like any other addiction, is a sin. It is a sin primarily because we are making an idol out of something. The feeling of pleasure and satisfaction is something that we can only get from the divine, which is God. That is why only God can make us whole, complete, and satisfied. If we get that from other objects, activities, or people, then we are getting from those things what we should have been getting from God. Another reason it is sin is that addiction is also indulging oneself in the pleasures of this world. As Christians, we know that anything of the world is an abomination to the God. Lastly, drug addiction is a sin because we are destroying our bodies. God has entrusted us with our bodies, and therefore we should take good care of them.

Drug addiction is a spiritual problem because it involves sin. However, it is also a mental and physical problem. When a person is addicted to drugs, it has adverse effects on their body and brain. The good thing is that no matter how severe drug addiction is, no one is too far from the grace and mercy of God. There are countless Christians who could repent and turn away from addiction and are now living a victorious life over it. It is all because of Christ. If you are someone who is struggling with drug addiction, know that in Christ there is hope.

Psalm 16:11

Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.

Father in heaven, it is only in You that I can find pleasure and satisfaction. Give me the grace to always seek these from You and never from any other substance, activity, object, or even person. You are the only one Who makes me whole and complete. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Father in heaven, it is only in You that I can find pleasure and satisfaction.

What is a good prayer for addiction?

It is important to note that drug addiction is something that you can never handle on your own strength. You will never be able to get yourself out of that addiction on your own. That is why we have to come before Christ—because only Christ can set you free from drug addiction.

If you are not a Christian, the most important thing you can do is repent from your life of sin and believe the Gospel of Christ. You may feel that God is far from you and that you are deep in the darkness. You surely are because of your sin. Not only that, but you also deserve God’s wrath for all of your sins. But the good news is that Christ came to bring hope. Jesus came to live the perfect, sinless life you should have lived, died the death you should have died, and He resurrected after three days. He proved that He is indeed the Son of God and conquered death. Christ paid for the penalty of your sins so that you may receive forgiveness. In Christ, you can receive adoption as God’s child. Those who are in Christ have been brought from darkness to light. Also, Christ came to deal with man’s very problem, which is sin. Those in Christ have a changed heart, which is all because of God’s grace working in them. Only Christ can liberate someone from the bondage of sin. In your case, Christ can liberate you from the bondage of drug addiction. If Christ has conquered death, surely He can conquer drug addiction. That is why, if you want to be set free from drug addiction, the best thing you can do is repent and believe the Gospel of Christ, knowing that it is the power of God that brings salvation to anyone who believes and sets the captives free.

Galatians 5:1

Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.

Father in heaven, it is only in You that I can find pleasure and satisfaction.

John 8:36

If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.

2 Corinthians 3:17

Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.

Ephesians 2:1-10

And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;

2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:

3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.

4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,

5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)

6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:

7 That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.

8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

If you are a Christian and have a past of drug addiction, you may still struggle. Addiction is not something that you can just get rid of right away. While some people do, others may take time to recover from drug addiction. That does not mean they haven’t been set free from drug addiction. Like other sins, there are areas in our lives that may take time. It is not about perfection but the direction of our lives. Are we going in the direction of purity and holiness? Are you going in the direction of overcoming drug addiction completely? We are all works in progress, and it is the Holy Spirit that sanctifies us. That is why the Bible says that God is at work in us to make us more and more like Jesus, and He is not yet finished working in us. For example, a person who just became a Christian may still struggle with controlling his temper, but soon he will be able to control it. It is the same with drug addiction. You will need God’s grace as you slowly overcome drug addiction. You can overcome drug addiction even if the pace is one step at a time. Remember, Christ has already set you free from it. The Holy Spirit, whom Christ left us as our Helper, is the one who will help you and empower you as you battle drug addiction. The battle that you are fighting is a battle that Christ has already won.

2 Timothy 2:21

If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master’s use, and prepared unto every good work.

1 Thessalonians 5:23

And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Galatians 2:20

I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

1 Thessalonians 4:3-5

3 For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication:

4 That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour;

5 Not in the lust of concupiscence, even as the Gentiles which know not God:

Colossians 3:5

Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:

Philippians 1:6

Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:

If you are battling drug addiction, here is a prayer you can pray:

Father in heaven, thank You because in Christ I have already been set free from the bondage of drug addiction. In Christ, I am not a slave to drugs. Give me the grace, Father, to always put what is earthly in me to death. Always remind me of the truth that in Christ, I am not a slave to sin but a slave to righteousness. I pray that I will completely recover from drug addiction, Father. It is only possible through your grace and the power of the Holy Spirit. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Father in heaven, it is only in You that I can find pleasure and satisfaction.

What is a good Bible verse for addiction?

Besides the Bible verses given above, another Bible verse you can meditate on is from 2 Corinthians 5:17, where it is written:

Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

If you are in Christ, you are a new creation. You are not the person who was addicted to drugs. You may be struggling, but it does not have any hold on you now. Also, in 1 Corinthians 10:13 it is written:

There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

It tells us that whenever you are encountering temptation, you are encountering it because you can overcome it by God’s grace. There is no such thing as a temptation that is beyond your ability to overcome.

Some other verses are:

Romans 6:17-18

17 But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.

18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.

Titus 2:11-12

11 For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,

12 Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;

Galatians 5:22-23

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,

23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

Philippians 4:13

I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

The verses you have just read are the truths that you can pray and meditate on always as you overcome drug addiction. You should always meditate on the truth that, in Christ, you have already been freed from the slavery of sin. The grace that you have received from Christ is not just grace regarding your salvation, but grace to renounce any ungodly thing like drugs and instead live a godly, upright, and self-controlled life. Speaking of self-control, this is one of the fruits that the Holy Spirit produces in you.

Here is how you can pray these Bible verses:

Father in heaven, I thank You because I have already been freed from the slavery of drug addiction in Christ. Thank You because You have given me the grace to renounce and choose not to succumb to drug addiction but instead live an upright, godly, and righteous life. Thank You, Holy Spirit, because You are at work in me. I pray that Your fruit in me shall be more evident in my life. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Father in heaven, it is only in You that I can find pleasure and satisfaction.

When dealing with drug addiction, we have to first deal with the very core of the spiritual problem, which only Christ can fix. We also must understand that drug addiction is also a mental and physical problem. It affects your brain; that is why you should also seek professional help regarding that matter as you also battle addiction spiritually. Remember that you can overcome it through Christ Who strengthens you.
