How To Ask For Something In Prayer

There are many kinds of prayers that we can pray to God. Looking through the entire Bible, we will find that we should pray prayers of adoration toward God where we admire, revere, praise, and hold God in the highest regard. We are also to pray prayers of repentance from the sins that we have committed. Even though we are already Christians, we are still works in progress that the Holy Spirit is sanctifying. That is why the Bible tells us to always keep on with repentance so that we may bear fruit. The Bible teaches us also to pray prayers of thanksgiving toward God. After all, everything that we have and why we are still here alive and well is all because of God’s grace and mercy toward us. Whatever circumstance we may find ourselves in, we should always have a grateful heart for God. The prayers that we pray are all about God and not about us. That is why prayer is an act of worship of God. However, we should also note that prayer is us communicating with God. In Christ, we are adopted as God’s children, and just like any child, we desire to commune and talk with our Heavenly Father. That is why prayer is also when you can pour your heart out to God. It is when you can tell God about your problems such as fears, anxieties, and worries. With that being said, it also means that you can ask God for something as you pray to Him.

Galatians 4:6-8

6 And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.

7 Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

8 Howbeit then, when ye knew not God, ye did service unto them which by nature are no gods.

Heavenly Father, You are our good Father Who gives good things to His children.

How to Ask for Something in Prayer

Can I ask God for something?

As God’s children, we should ask God for things. When we encounter situations where we need something, our first response should not be to figure it out on our own but to come before God in prayer to ask Him for help. Prayer is an act of humility before God. We pray because we acknowledge that we are not capable of anything apart from God’s grace. We have to remember that everything comes from the LORD—finances, talent, intellect, assets, and everything we have. God is the Creator of the universe, the source of all things, and He created things out of nothing. If we need something, the best response is to go to the source of everything and not try to solve the problem on our own.

This applies to whatever circumstance you are in where you need to ask God for something. You may be going through financial difficulties, and you need financial provision for your needs or your family’s needs. It could also be that you are doing ministry or your job, and you need to ask God for the intellect, wisdom, and understanding to do your work excellently. The same applies if you are looking for work and are praying for open doors or opportunities to get a job. Whatever you need, you should ask God, Who is your Heavenly Father. Any parent, if their child needs something, wants their child to approach them and ask them for it. Most parents feel bad if they know that their child has a problem and needs something but does not approach them. Remember that God is our Heavenly Father and that He loves us and cares for us.

Galatians 4:6-8

7 Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

The earth is the Lord’s, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.

How to Ask for Something in Prayer

Another reason why we should ask God for something is that Jesus teaches us to do so. In Matthew 7:7-11, Jesus teaches us that if we want something, then we should ask God. Those who ask will receive, and those who knock will find the door opened. James 4:3 tells us that we do not have things because we do not ask. If we want something, we should ask God, and when we ask, we should ask in faith. However, it is also essential to understand that this does not make God a magician. The passage in Matthew 7:7-11 does not teach us that whatever we ask for we will get, making God resemble some genie in a bottle.

In the following verses, after Jesus teaches us to ask, seek, and knock, He also teaches us that God is a good Father who gives good things to those who ask Him. If earthly fathers know how to give good gifts to their children, even more so does God. That means that if there are times when our prayers don’t get answered, it is perhaps because what we are asking for is not good for us. Whatever God gives, it is good. At the same time, we have to trust God’s infinite wisdom. That does not mean that we should not ask God for something—the Bible teaches us to ask God for things and believe in His response, but there is nothing about praying for a new car, job promotion, breakthrough, or other things. Prayer is the means God has ordained to cause things to happen. Yes, God knows everything before we even ask Him. However, that does not mean we should not pray to God and ask. He wants us to pray and ask Him because it means we are coming before Him in humility and acknowledging that we depend on Him. But, at the same time, whatever God’s will is, we are to submit to it and pray that, in the end, it is God’s will that is done and not ours.

Matthew 7:7-11

7 Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:

8 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.

9 Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone?

10 Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent?

11 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?

James 4:3

Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.

Luke 22:41-42

41 And he was withdrawn from them about a stone’s cast, and kneeled down, and prayed,

42 Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.

Heavenly Father, You are our good Father Who gives good things to His children. I pray that whenever I find myself in times of need or difficulties, I will never try to solve my problems independently. But instead, I shall come before You in humility and ask You for what I need since I depend on You. Thank You because you are my good Father, and the only things that You give me are good gifts. Help me to trust Your will and wisdom as You answer my prayer. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Heavenly Father, You are our good Father Who gives good things to His children.

How do you ask God for something?

If you want to ask God for something, simply ask Him. If you need financial provision because of financial difficulties, pray to God and ask Him for financial provision. Then again, what you ask from God does not necessarily have to be only things that you need. There is nothing wrong with believing God can provide you with something like a new car, an opportunity to have a trip abroad, etc. Still, how you pray is you ask God in your prayer. For example, given that you need financial provision in the financial difficulty that you are experiencing, and you want a new car and an opportunity to have a trip abroad, here is how you can pray for it and ask God:

Heavenly Father, everything comes from You alone. I pray and ask for the financial provision I need as I experience financial difficulties. I pray for opened doors to more side hustles so I can earn more income or for a salary increase in my job. I also pray for a new car, specifically a Ford pickup truck, so that I will be able to bring my children to and from home and school and use it for other chores. I also pray for an opportunity to travel abroad with my family so I can relax, have fun, and bring my children to places they would enjoy. I ask in the mighty name of Jesus. Amen.

Notice that when praying for a car, we did not just ask God for a car. We were specific when praying for a car. When we pray and ask God for something, it is essential to be specific. Also, another critical thing to remember as you ask God for something in prayer is that you pray according to His will. In 1 John 5:14-15, we know that God hears our prayers and answers them if we pray according to His will. We know His will by reading our Bibles. We can pray and ask God for things that are good and acceptable to Him if we have a renewed mind through the work of the Holy Spirit as we read our Bibles. For example, let’s say you already have enough, yet you ask God for more financial blessings. Then, what you are requesting is not within God’s will because it is a prayer that stems from greed and lack of contentment.

1 John 5:14-15

14 And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:

15 And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.

Heavenly Father, You are our good Father Who gives good things to His children.

How to Ask for Something in Prayer

Whenever we want something, we should not hesitate nor be too shy to come to God and ask Him. In Christ, we are His children, and we can call God “Abba Father.” We have access to His throne of grace, in which we can commune with Him and ask of Him. We know that whether what we ask is granted or not, it is for our good because God loves us. Also, it is essential to remember that God is not just willing to give good things to His children, but He is also capable. It is one thing to be willing, but it is another to be capable of doing it. God is both willing and capable.
