A Prayer For A Brokenhearted Friend

A broken heart is not necessarily due to a romantic relationship where, for instance, one’s partner has cheated, a couple has broken up, or a man has been rejected by the woman he is pursuing. While those are terribly painful scenarios that can break a friend’s heart, other relationships can also break a heart. When a friend betrays us, our efforts are not recognized, we are cast aside by people, we are hurt by the words of others, and more, it can break our hearts—any painful circumstance can.

Heavenly Father, whatever source of sorrow or anguish my friend may have that has broken his heart, I pray that You would mend his heart and restore his soul. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

The God Who Heals

Whatever sorrow or anguish that may have caused our hearts to be broken, the comforting truth is that God heals. In Psalm 147:3, it is written that God heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. Indeed, the wounds from any circumstance that has broken our hearts are so deep that no medicine can heal and treat them. While the physical wounds that we may have can heal after a certain period, it is different when it comes to wounds that the naked eye can’t see. Deep emotional wounds tend to be difficult to heal. However, God does not only heal and mend our broken hearts but He also restores our souls. Whatever pain has ravaged our souls, God can restore them.

Not only that, the Bible also says that God is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit (Psalm 34:18 The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; And saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.). It is horrible to have a crushed spirit. It is as if you will be disheartened and dismayed forever by the heartbreak that you’ve experienced. However, the comforting truth is that God is near us and saves us.

These truths are essential as we pray for our friend with a broken heart. We pray these passages for our friend by applying them.

Heavenly Father, I pray for my friend whose heart is broken that You will heal him and restore him. Remind him that he is not alone in such a painful season because You are with him. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

The key principle to keep in mind when praying for your brokenhearted friend, as we learn from the above passages, is that you are praying for your friend to experience what the Bible says about Who God is and to be reminded of such comforting truths. So, you pray that your friend would be healed and that he would also be reminded that God is near him.

Inseparable from God’s Love

In Romans 8:38-39, it is written that neither death nor life, angels, rulers, things present or things to come, powers, height or depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus. In other words, no matter how deep those emotional wounds are that your friend may have or no matter how heartbreaking what happened was, it is not enough to separate him or her from the love of God. Even in those painful and difficult seasons of life, he or she can still experience God’s love in Christ.

In Romans 8:28, it is also written that God works all things for the good of those who love Him. While others may have meant to harm us by whatever source of sorrow or anguish we experience, God, in His sovereignty, can use it for our good. As Joseph said, others meant it for evil, but God meant it for good (Genesis 50:20 But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive.). Those truths encourage us to trust God and rest our faith in Him as we journey through painful seasons. It is what you can pray so that your heartbroken friend will be reminded of God’s protection.

Father in heaven, while my friend may feel that he is in the midst of a dark valley, walking through it in this painful season, may he experience Your love in Christ even in such a season, for nothing can separate him from Your love. May He continually trust in You, knowing that You hold all things together and that all things work for the good of those who love You. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Prayer and Action

While indeed your friend needs constant prayers, especially as he or she goes through that difficult season, a faithful friend is not just someone who will pray for his or her friend but also someone who will be with them (Proverbs 17:17 A friend loveth at all times, And a brother is born for adversity.). Being a good friend does not necessarily mean that you always have to give words of wisdom, guidance, encouragement, and counsel. While indeed those things are good, sometimes even the worthiest statement cannot speak to a bleeding heart. What people need sometimes is not good advice but a good listener and someone who will just journey with them.

 

And so, by all means pray for your brokenhearted friend. But besides that, message them, call them, ask them how they are doing, try to be with them as much as possible, listen to their hurts and pains, etc. In other words, reflect Christ to them. As followers of Christ, we are called to love one another (Colossians 3:12; John 13:34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love ).
