Scriptures On Faith

Faith is an essential part of life for everyone – from the devoted religious adherent to the hardened atheist.  It is a fact, for as humans we cannot control what happens next.  We must trust the people in our lives to treat us well.  Sometimes that trust is honored others it is broken. When this happens, we hurt ourselves and those around us.  There is, however, a sure and certain type of faith available to us.  The source of this faith is from the living God who has communicated to humanity through his written word the Bible in which there are many scriptures on faith.  One man who is held up as an example of living by faith in both the Old and New Testaments is Abraham.  In the book of Genesis God called Abraham to leave his homeland and go where directed. Abraham demonstrated his faith by trusting the promises God made, getting up, and going.  The only tangible assurance for Abraham that God would keep his word was when his son Isaac was born.  Despite this, “Abraham believed God and it was credited to him as righteousness” (Genesis 15:6).

The Apostle Paul in the New Testament also used Abraham’s example as he wrote scriptures on faith.   In the book of Romans, taking the role of a prosecuting attorney, Paul laid out a case for salvation by faith alone.   He emphasized that Abraham was saved by faith before he was circumcised or was able to do any other good works.  “For the promise to Abraham and his offspring that he would be heir of the world did not come through the law but through the righteousness of faith” (Romans 4:13).

One final instance of scriptures on faith (and possibly the most memorable) is Hebrews 11 often termed, the “Hall of Faith”.  In the chapter, the author of Hebrews lists more than 15 people or groups who achieved great things as a result of their faith.  Once again, Abraham stands out in the chapter, “By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going . . .  For he was looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose designer and builder is God” (Hebrews 11:8,10).  May all who seek to please God follow the example of Abraham and walk in the footsteps of faith.
