A Dad’s Prayer For Son

As a father, praying for your son is something you probably do all the time. You pray for your son because you love him. You also pray for him because you have concerns regarding your son, like his safety. Know that as a Christian, you should never be consumed with fear or worries. In fact, it is a sin, because it means you don’t trust God or lack  faith in Him. If you are a Christian, then in Christ, you have already been adopted as God’s child. Christ has given you access to God’s throne of grace. That means you can approach God with whatever fears or worries you have. The Bible tells us that we are to cast our anxieties to God because He cares for us. Also, worrying never adds to our life span. If your son is in Christ, know that God values him. Your son is more valuable than the sparrows whom God sustains. 

1 Peter 5:7

Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

Matthew 6:26-27

26 Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?

27 Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?

A Dad’s Prayer For Son –

Father in heaven, I pray that I shall always trust You regarding my son. I feel peace knowing that it is You who looks after him. I pray that whenever I feel anxious, I will never hold onto those worries and try to deal with them on my own, but instead, I shall cast them unto You, who cares for me. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

How do I pray for my son?

There are many things that you can pray for your son. For example, you can pray for his studies if he is still a student. Being faithful to his studies is very important, not just because he ought to honor God in his studies by being faithful in them, but also because what he learns from his studies will help him if he goes into the professional world. If he neglects them, he will have a hard time being successful if the work demands specific skills or knowledge that he ignored during his studies. 

1 Corinthians 10:31

Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.

Colossians 3:23-24

23 And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;

24 Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.

Here is how you can pray for your son’s studies:

Father in heaven, I pray that my son shall continuously pursue excellence in his studies. I pray that he shall always be faithful by studying well, submitting what he needs to submit on time, and understanding his subjects clearly. Remind him, Father, that he is ultimately studying for You and that his studies are the things that You have entrusted him with, and therefore he should be faithful to them. I pray that he shall also see the importance of studies and how they will help him in his future. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

If your son is already an adult and is working, then you can pray for him to be excellent at his job and be faithful in the work that he does. The way he works also gives non-Christians a perception of who Jesus is. If Christ has indeed changed his life and is lazy at work, people will find a disconnection between his faith and the way he works.

Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men.

Father in heaven, I pray for my son to always be faithful with the work that he does, which is something you have entrusted to him, just as you entrusted Adam with the garden to work and keep. Remind him that he is ultimately working for You and that You deserve excellence. I pray that he will not dread work, but love it, for it is Your design for men to work. Father, give him the grace to always be diligent and skillful in his work. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Another thing you can pray for regarding your adult son is his love life. Dating and getting married is surely one of the things that he is thinking about. It is essential that whoever he marries is also a genuine follower of Christ, so that he will never be unequally yoked with an unbeliever.

2 Corinthians 6:14

Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?

Heavenly Father, I pray that my son will never compromise the standard you have given us when choosing a spouse, which is that she should be a genuine follower of Christ. I pray that he shall be wise when it comes to choosing whom to marry and that he shall not look at their outward appearance, but at their soul. May he also have a kingdom mindset when it comes to choosing whom to marry and that he will choose a wife who will be a perfect fit for him, as he ministers and lives as the salt and light to the world. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Your son’s safety is another of the things you can pray for. After all, there are so many scenarios where your son may find himself in danger. 

Psalm 121:5-8

5 The Lord is thy keeper: the Lord is thy shade upon thy right hand.

6 The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night.

7 The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul.

8 The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.

Here is a prayer you can pray for your son’s safety:

Father in heaven, I pray that You will always protect my son from any harm or danger. Keep him safe from any accidents or any evil person who may have malicious intentions towards others. Give him the grace to always be alert and aware of his surroundings. Thank You, Father, because it is You who looks after him. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

One of the essential things you can pray for your son is his growth as a Christian. You can pray that he shall always seek God’s Word, fight for his prayer time with God, and remain connected to the church community. You can also pray that he shall strive to live a holy life and always live an obedient life towards God, which is possible only by the grace of God.

Heavenly Father, I pray that You give [name of your son] the grace to continuously pursue an upright, blameless, and holy life, and that he shall always obey You and your commandments. I pray that he shall always live in wisdom and that he shall always delight in the fear of You. I pray that he shall seek Your Word, pray to You, and be connected to the church community. May he continue to grow in his walk with You. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

If your son is not a Christian, then the most important thing you can pray for him is to repent and believe in the Gospel of Christ. The things you can pray for, including the things mentioned above, will only be available and make sense if one is in Christ. If he is not in Christ, he wouldn’t think of working for God. God’s grace towards those in Christ is different from those who are not. Most of all, only those who are in Christ have eternal life. 

Ephesians 2:1-10

Titus 3:5

You can offer this prayer for your son, if he is not yet a Christian:

Father in heaven, I pray that as I preach the Gospel to my son, You would open his spiritual eyes and turn his heart of stone to a heart of flesh so that he may see his need for Jesus, repent, and believe the Gospel of Christ. I pray that he will commit to following Christ, knowing that eternal life can only be found in Him. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

You cannot just pray for your son’s salvation as a father. You should also preach the Gospel to him. It is important to remember that the Bible commands parents to raise their children to become people who know the Lord and train them in the ways of God. However, in the end, remember that amidst the worries and concerns you have regarding your son, the Lord is watching over him, if he is in Christ.
