A Blessing Prayer for the Dying

Death is inevitable in our lives, even for the believers and followers of Jesus Christ. Ecclesiastes 3 tells us that there is a time and a season for everything in our lives, including death. In our pain and seasons of mourning, God is always there comforting us, giving us peace, and helping us move forward.

What about those who are sick and dying? What can you do to comfort them? Can they find peace, knowing that their time is up? You may have many questions about it, but one thing that will surely help a dying person and give them peace is offering them a prayer. Here is an example:

Heavenly Father, thank You for my friend whose life was full of Christ. Now that they are moving on to be with You, You are their ultimate gain. May they behold Your beauty Lord and enjoy worshiping You in Jesus’ name for eternity. Amen.

This prayer is based on Philippians 1:21, “For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.”

Heavenly Father, thank You for my friend whose life was full of Christ.

What to say to someone who is dying soon?

It can be hard to find the right words when someone is dying. However, as a child of God, you want to ensure that they are full of peace and faith in the LORD. Remind him or her about the promises of God in his or her life, and help them find joy in the face of death, knowing that the LORD Jesus Christ is waiting for him or her to finally be with the Heavenly Father, along with all the angels and saints in heaven. You can also offer them a prayer.

When you pray for the dying, you ensure that you magnify the promises of God, His Word, and remind the person about the goodness of the LORD. In this manner, he or she will receive the peace of God and depart this realm full of faith in the LORD, who is ever faithful. And if that person has not yet received the LORD, lead him or her in this manner of prayer:

Lord Jesus Christ, thank You for everything You have done for me. Thank You for shedding Your blood on the cross to wash away my sins. Forgive me for all the things that I have done, and thank You for Your mercy and grace that allows me to share the promises of God, such that those who believe in Your name will be saved. You are my Lord and my Savior Jesus. Receive my spirit, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Heavenly Father, thank You for my friend whose life was full of Christ.

What does a dying person want to hear?

People feel different things when facing death. There could be fear, anxiety, sadness, loneliness, and uncertainty, while others may finally feel relieved to rest and leave this world. People who are dying don’t usually tell others what they want to hear in their last moments, but by putting yourself in their shoes, you would likely want to hear words of gratitude, peace, hope, faith, joy, and love before leaving the world.

If you are also close to the person, you can thank them for all the good things they have done for you. Tell them how much you love them and that all your memories together will be treasured forever. Fill the room with Christ’s love and the presence of God. You are the salt of the earth and the light of the world, even in the face of someone’s death. Your presence is an encouragement and a vessel for God’s peace.

What do you pray for when someone dies?

How do you pray for someone who is dying? What should you say before the LORD, if you ask? You can pray the Scriptures over that person and declare the promises of God through Christ Jesus. Here are some Bible verses, along with a sample prayer, that can uplift a person’s soul as they prepare to move on to a new life with God:

1. Philippians 1:21

For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.

Heavenly Father, thank You for my friend whose life was full of Christ.

Thank You Jesus for Your promise in the life of my friend. You are the resurrection and life. He/she will live to be with Your presence forever, even though the body dies. You are his/her ultimate reward, and suffering will be no more, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

3. Psalms 23

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Heavenly Father, thank You for always being a Constant to my friend. You lead him beside still waters, and You will continue to do so even after his life ends here on earth. He fears no evil, though he walks through the valley of the shadow of death. Your presence is here to comfort him and guide him to the path of life, and he shall dwell in Your house forever LORD, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Heavenly Father, thank You for my friend whose life was full of Christ.
